Amazon proved itself a major player in the television field when its original program Transparent won the Golden Globe for best TV series, musical or comedy and star Jeffrey Tambor won best actor.
Not only was it Amazons first-ever Golden Globe award, Transparent also became the first online series to ever win a best series award, comedy or drama, at the annual awards show.
My new best friend, Tambor said of the digital media company during his acceptance speech.
The series stars Tambor as a father of three who reveals he identifies as a woman. There was a lot of love for the show on the red carpet prior to the awards. Shameless star William H. Macy, nominated for best actor in a TV comedy, said he didnt bother preparing a speech because I think Jeffrey Tambors going to win.
In his acceptance speech, a visibly touched Tambor noted, This is big. This is much bigger than me. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press for putting us on the map and making people aware of our story.
On the red carpet prior to the ceremony, creator Jill Soloway admitted she considered other homes for the series, but Amazon ended up being a perfect fit. You want to be somewhere where theyre passionate about you, she noted. And theyve been wonderful.
Transgender actress Alexandra Billings, who plays Davina on the series, admitted she was surprised by the popularity of the show. I knew the writing was fantastic, I knew it was a great group of actors, she said. But to have the public embracing us the way it has is overwhelming.
In her acceptance speech, Soloway thanked the trans community, adding, They are our family. They make this possible. This award is dedicated to the memory of Leelah Alcorn and to many trans people who died too young.
Tambor echoed that sentiment in his speech, saying, I would like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community. Thank you for your inspiration, thank you for your patience and thank you for letting us be a part of the change.
Backstage, Soloway spoke about how her own parent came out as trans three years ago. It was a lot, she admitted. A big announcement. And my first thought was, I love you, Im proud of you, thank you for being you and telling me who you are. My second thought, a couple moments later, was, I think i have a TV show.'
Soloway elaborated that at that point, she knew little about the transgender community. She thanked Amazon for taking a risk, noting, The content of the show is transformative.
A visibly choked up Tambor thanked Soloway for the opportunity, noting, Im 70 years old, these (roles) dont come along. He added that he was grateful, Not for the reviews or for awards
just to get it right. Im just honored.
A transnormative show won an award.
Shocker.
Let me be clear. I dedicated my peaceful night’s rest to the transgender community.
I guess the homposexuals and lesbian communities have been mined for all the entertainment possible. Now, it's on to the transgenders. Next polyamory? Bestiality? Cropophilia?
The transgender “community” can go screw itself as far as I’m concerned. Oh, wait.... maybe they literally can.
Who the f**k thinks like that????
Ah, those Golden Globes ... ever notice how the Sag Awards follow?
A crazy person who was (through no fault of her own) brought up by a crazy person. Think of Lena Dunham: these are multigenerational nutcase families.
The “show” is just propaganda with pauses for soft-core porn.
Gender dysphoria is a form of the broader disorder of body dysphoria. Which involves things like people who want their leg cut off because they don’t believe it belongs to them.
I’m perfectly willing to consider the possibility that some transgender people are born that way, but the notion that none of them are disordered, unlike every other type of dysphoria, seems really, really odd.
Jeffrey Tambor is a terrific actor. It’s too bad he got all caught up in this transgender crap.
But to have the public embracing us the way it has is overwhelming.
Is this ass sure all of this embracing is going on? I knew NOTHING of this show until this moment.
And now, the award for Best Promotion of Mental Illness, Perversion, or Deviancy Using Popular Media goes to ...
I watched the whole season of this show.. frankly, it’s great. It doesn’t actually celebrate what you think... in fact, it focuses on the selfishness within a family that breeds all sorts of long-term disfunction... particularly in the lives of the adult children. The parenting model of the anything goes 70’s, reflected in the lives of a very liberal jewish family. It may not be everyones cup of tea, but it’s very revealing.
Gosh, maybe for its next trick Amazon will turn a profit.
I like Jeffrey Tambor a lot but I haven’t been able to see it because I don’t have Amazon.
What was going on with the scene in which he was in the Ladies Room? I’ve heard about it and it’s supposed to be uncomfortable to watch.

I especially like his voice. I think it’s both sexy AND soothing, and I think he’s awfully cute.
