Microsoft's head of Windows Insider program, Gabriel Aul, has confirmed that Windows 10 will require a fresh install on Windows devices older than Windows 7.
Revealed in a reply from his Twitter account, Aul wrote that there won't be any full upgrade paths as these will be solely available for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users.
It makes sense given that some of them might be on older filesystems (e.g. FAT32). That's also assuming that Windows 10 will run on these systems, which although they may have enough resources (RAM/CPU) to power Microsoft's newest OS, may well run into compatibility issues with legacy components/peripherals (rather than software).
That said, you can upgrade Windows XP to Windows 10 (Technical Preview) and still keep some (if not all) of your applications and settings in place. You will need to adhere to three rules (same bit and language versions) and have access to older Windows ISOs.
Microsoft is set to reveal more details about Windows 10 at an event scheduled on January 21 at its campus in Redmond. There's even talk of an updated version of Office for Mobile being announced there.
I hope it will be under 100 bucks.

I will be sticking to Windows 7 until the kinks get worked out and Windows 10 has wide acceptance. Microsoft unfortunately has a bad history of introducing the latest greatest variation of Windows that turned out to be duds. Remember Windows ME, Windows Vista and now Windows 8?

I am far from a Microsoft fan (very very far), but my Windows 7 machine at work is not bad at all.
And my company (which is very tech savvy) has chosen NOT to upgrade.
‘Twould seem that a prudent move for MS would be to keep tuning up a good OS, not change things.
Apple has fallen into the same improvement trap...even as an Apple fanboy, I think little of their latest upgrades.
Given how much of a pain in a the arse it was to upgrade a virgin 8.0 device to 8.1 I think I’ll keep my device at 7, just like I did when that dog 8 was unleashed on the world.
Win 10 is a free update. Microsoft service packs and updates are also free, Normally, new OS versions are not.

Windows 8 is just an unmitigated disaster, Folks responsible for deciding, lets cram the ZUNE interface onto the desktop, and not only that make it the default interface should all have just been summarily fired... 8.1 made 8.0 at least usable, but its still a giant fustercluck.

I see Microsoft abandon ship on Windows 8 and playing catch up with Apple and Google.
They are promising the moon to their customers, and like used car dealer even changed the name from Windows 9 in order to sell it by calling it Windows 10.
I think Microsoft is in big trouble and they know it.
The good news is that I believe Windows 10 will be good since Microsoft is following Apple, Google and Amazon's lead of letting developers make it.
And just what will I be able to do that I can’t now?
When Vista was properly updated with service updates it turned into a fine system, still have one running here, it never causes a problem. I use 7 for most of my computers, I have several at home and at work. I have 8.1 on a notebook. It has simply never caused a problem, I use a start button add on but other than that it is solid.
