Funny...I only got a glimpse of the luxury box, and I thought "Who the heck was that guy in red? He reminds me of the the chunky guy with glasses from "The Wolf of Wall Street"!"

"...where have these teams been if they worked so bloody hard been since the salary cap came into practice? Why don't we see them dominating the NFL as they did in the '80s to mid-'90s..."

Which is precisely why I don't think New England gets enough credit for the teams they have been able to consistently field in the Salary Cap Era. They certainly aren't doing it with a lot of high draft picks (top 20)

The flag should have been thrown at Stafford, for throwing yet another crappy pass behind the receiver. A good QB gets that to Pettigrew in stride and he perhaps walks in for a probable game-ending TD.

Strange officiating call yes, but enough plays left on the field to overcome it.

Stafford...0-18 on the road against above .500 teams now, including only 3 points in the second half of a rare playoff game that was there for the taking.

...the guy's simply not an elite caliber QB, and shows no signs of improving.

...of course defense/special teams didn't do them any favors either when it counted.

The Detroit Lions, 1 playoff win in 57 years, and have now lost 8 straight(add that to the record books along with their 0-16 season)...

1957 and counting...of SOL

But unless it is like John Elway who refused to play for Baltimore, players go where they are drafted. Like Johnny Manziel did.

And for the record, that Browns team did go on to Baltimore and win two superbowls for whatever can be read into that.

The whole equation complex, the Niners had one of the greatest Quarterbacks ever and one of the greatest coaches ever in Bill Walsh.

I’ll spare the whole essay, bottomline, a lot of new teams have won the Superbowl since salary-caps came into play.

did u notice the final timeout called by cincy?

1st down, running play ... 2:45 left, 40 on play clock. INDY would have had to snap it.
clock was running.

cincy calls time out.
2nd down is run, then clock goes to 2:00 minutes. actually 1.55. next play, then clock runs to 1:10.

ALTERNATIVE:
DON’T CALL THE TIME OUT. CLOCK RUNS TO 2:05, PLAY RUN, THEN 2 MINUTE WARNING ... 3RD DOWN IS RUN ... THEN TIMEOUT STOPS IT AT 1:45.

are you aware of that basic tactic ... do not use the final timeout unless it is necessary to keep the clock from going all the way to the 2 min warning. (which wastes the 2 min warning)
if the clock is 2:38 and 37 in on the play clock, do NOT call timeout!
if the clock is 2:38 and 39 is on the play clock, call timeout! (or the 2 minute warning is wasted)

this is 5th grade stuff.

What a ‘mare for Cincinnati, or nightmare. That was terrible, one year later, same kind of bad dream of a game. Chargers defeated them last year.

Might as well wish the Colts luck versus Denver. They do stand a chance.

The experts this year though were picking the Bengals over the Colts, sure didn’t work out, ouch. Ravens looked pretty awesome, thought that was actually a good game to watch because Baltimore was an underdog and Steelers fans were sure they were going to win it.

Yeah...like I figured. The panthers lb core aint the only thing badass about that defense....they are deep along the dline. And Roman Harper has that secondary ballin.
Only neg to the panthers is...cams head. He has gotta display mental toughness.

:: the Detroit receiver jerked on the Dallas secondary’s face mask during the late play where the flag was picked up, and where there was neither an offensive pass interference penalty called, or... a defensive interference penalty call. ::

You have pointed out what I consider the biggest problem with “The Call”.

Zebras miss stuff on every play and there was no mention of a “face mask” or “hands to the face”. If that is why they picked up the flag, it would have been better (and more proper) to announce that there were 2 penalties on the play. We can conclude, therefore, that the zebra who threw the flag didn’t see the receiver grab the defenders face mask.

Lions fans this morning should be concerned about the negating of the penalty without explanation...not even a “there was no penalty on the play” type of announcement. If there was a penalty, call it. If there were 5 penalties, call them all and let the coaching staffs sort it all out.

At that stage of the game and given the play-outcome circumstances, no ^professional NFL zebra^ should just say, “Oops, guess I was mistaken. Let’s play on.”

That crew of zebras have massive quantities of egg on their faces...starting with Morelli.

Note also that in the 5-yard version of “running-into-the-kicker”, the test is whether the kicker was allowed to return to the ground safely after follow-through.

Detroit’s punter was “under-cut” as his foot returned to ground...the Dallas punter had re-established himself when the contact occured.

"I do think the Niners and Cowboys teams of the '90s basically bought some of the best players there were."

Smith, Aikman, Irvin, Harper, Johnston, Newton, Stepnoski, Williams, Gogan,Stone, Woodson, Maryland, Jeffcoat, Lett (Who was very good despite the two bonehead plays that are hyped to death), Hennings, Tolbert, Bates, and Jones were all drafted into the Cowboy's organization.

The key during that era was the ability to retain star players that have developed, not "buy" them.

Morning dogg, big and all the others on my NFL Ping List. A few closing thoughts on this Week 18 Thread--

We all have teams we follow and each of us gives as well as we get. Some teams win and some teams lose. It is fight up the Super Bowl hill and in the end, only one team will be left standing in the spotlight. Players, coaches and team management are in flux-- Some, I agree, have more flux than other, but the game is constantly changing.

What has not changed is the dingbat/manure spreader factor. All year the group of FReepers of who come to this thread week in, week out rooting for their teams and bash their rivals. All in good fun with some wins (like over the Iggles and Deadeskins, as an example) being more sweet than others--

Dear Sweet, Dear Departed Allegra and I loved to go at each other. She savaging my beloved Cowboys and me poking fun at her Texicans. Me and big are thick as thieves on our politics but we will be going at each other with icepicks next week--

That is part of the fun and, honestly, that is why they have horse races, campers. Someone wins and someone gets beat. Some calls get called, some don't. Plays viewed from one angle are entirely different when viewed from another. The refs are human and make mistakes. It is called football not because of the kicking but because the foot often finds its way into the mouth-- It is the nature of the game.

Yet the playoffs roll around and the dingbat/manure spreader posters pop up with their inane "Just the facts, ma'am" pronouncements that no sane person over the age of 12 would ever consider.

"Oh, the refs have been bought and paid for!"

"The NFL is fixed and you cannot tell me different!"

"My team is anointed by God to beat all those other teams run by the Devil in their bully ways!" said with a completely straight face with no joke following--

"If it was not fixed, my team would win! And all the other teams would get down on their knees and worship my team! That would only be fair 'cause my team didn't win! Boo-Hoo! Boo-Hoo!"

Gadzooks, these immature idiots do not engage their brains before they post, so their diarrhea of the id spills out and about. Their Moms need to go down in the basement, clean up the smell and spank their nasty little unwiped arses until the cows come home.

However, on FR any poster can come into a thread and have their say. Whether it is welcome or not is another matter--

My approach is simple. Those who like to crap on this thread when they have not been on it regularly during the whole season are not welcome and in my opinion do not deserve to even be answered. Why shortchange your intellect by lying down with the swine--

The want attention and I am not going to give it to them. Their cry to be replied to just proves my point.

So, you pays your nickle and gets what you pay for.

Regardless of the team, I’d rather said Karma is delivered by the opposing team, not the crew assigned to make sure the game is played above-board and by the rules.

I take umbrage with your use of the term “whining”. As a Lions fan, I live in reality and realize that the Lions lost.

In this thread, I am attempting to make reasoned rhetoric regarding a topic that ^all^ of the NFL is debating. My point here is that the Officiating Crew holds some accountability for what is universally being panned as a bad call.

I do not ascribe to the NFL-wants-Dallas-to-win-for-the-money tin-foilers nor do I agree that there is some sort of “love-in” between Jerry/NFL/Officiating crews.

Ultimately, I argue that “The Call” deflated the Lions completely. They failed to look past that situation and lost the game. In the end, I’d rather that Dallas deflated the Lions rather than the officiating.

Either way, it’s a loss. Please, don’t intimate that I am “whining” about the loss. I’m concerned about the integrity of the game...which STARTS with the officiating crew.

As a life long Saints fan since their inception in 1967, I can relate to the zebras sh__ing on my team. However, we had a 15 minute whine rule in our house though. Wish rest of the NFL fans had the same, as it generally it tends to even out in the end.
