I can recall growing up in Chicago in the 1950s. "Oklahoma" gas stations were the most visible. I seem to recall 19 cents a gallon. The lowest price as a driver was around 29 cents. Seemed like it always was about the same as a pack of cigarettes or gallon of milk.
25 cents per gallon.
If you adjust that 29 cents for inflation we are at the same price level now!
13 cents in Riverside, Mo. 1967
For me: 49 cents at at Gulf station...before I drove. Used to love those goofy Gulf commercials.
16 years old ... 1964 ... .28 in Boston suburb.
19 cents with attendant who checked air, battery, tires, and cleaned windows for you
with free Blue Chip stamps
and
a free glass or plate for your dining room
(regular price was 22 cents, this was a ‘gas war’ sale)
I remember 19 cents a gallon, AND you got a free glass too! That would have been my high school years.
NYS....27 cents....when I had the car for my Senior year. Cigarettes were the same price.
I just read that gas will be going for $1.75, maybe in some months.
NIIIICE...!
as a kid I specifically remember a sign saying 79 cents a gallon
Lowest price as a driver was 21¢ a gallon during the periodic “gas wars” of the late 60s @ Newell’s Standard on HWY 436 across from the Prairie Lake Drive In.
$.17 in gas wars...mid-sixties in Houston.
You’re right, they were always giving out free stuff. Owning a gas station was not prestigious in the least.
.24
I can remember my dad complaining about .35 per gallon.
When I started driving it was around 55¢.
I began driving in 87, lowest I can remember things was around 79.9
luckies out’a’da machine were a quarter with .02 in the celophane wrapper .... 23 cent a pack.
I remember seeing the gas war signs when I was a kid in the 60’s.
