Millions of children and adults who received the latest video games were prevented from playing them on Chirstmas thanks to a DOS attack on Xbox and PlayStation networks.
Online game networks Xbox Live and PlayStation Network were knocked offline much of Christmas Day in an apparent DDos (distributed denial of service) attack.
Taking credit for the takedown: a group called Lizard Squad, which previously claimed credit for August attacks on the PlayStation Network and online games World of Warcraft and League of Legends.
Both networks were still having problems Friday morning. The network status Web page for Xbox Live showed service as being back up but "limited," while PSN was still officially offline.

Should we go bomb North Korea?
Well, on the upside, maybe the gamers will do something like, oh I don’t know - READ?
Good work by Lizard Squad. Maybe we can pay them to keep it up all year?
Now, that is funny.
“Anonymous” was supposedly going after the Lizard Squad, already posted some pics of them... 12-13 year old punks.
Did they put up an error message saying “go read a book, do something nice to help your family, or clean your room?”
THAT would have been appreciated.
It would be interesting to know what the % of folks doing this multi player game stuff also regularly read.

I can attest to my daughter, “Brainiac”, who is an avid gamer.
But don’t you DARE stand between her an a bookstore. It’s about as safe as standing between Chuck Schumer and a mike.
Yeah, I would think there would be a lot of overlapping just from sci-fi/fantasy fans. I wonder how it compares to the general population of non-video gamers.

I’m guessing Sony and Microsft won’t be calling attention to their inability to invest sufficiently in anti-hack/anti-DDOS precautions in their respective annual reports to investors.
I’ll drive!
Frankly, I support this; It’s Christmas Day you silly geeks! Put down the stupid controller and go spend some time with your families!!!!!
Yep, although its very tough defending against a DDOS attack.
That, a DOS, or simply so many people tried to get online at once, which looks just like a DOS attack?
This multi-player gamer reads Free Republic...
It's theoretically impossible to have an anti-DDoS on an open network: this is because it has to be receptive to new, previously unknown senders/clients.
You could limit things by having a closed network, with an open-network essentially being a gateway to the closed network, but the open portion would still be vulnerable.
In a purely closed network you could achieve anti-DDoS by (1) having all nodes w/ a [known] static address, (2) rejecting all traffic from an unknown address, and (3) when a node starts saturating the network, exclude it for a length of time.
They seem to be hitting Facebooj today.
Theoretically impossible, with the requirements you need for something like PSN or MSLive.
I read voraciously. Most of my gamer friends read alot too.
