Ive been trying to come up with a list of nationalities or ethnic groupseven subgroupsabout whom it is still safe to make a joke publicly, since political correctness is shrinking the domain down to the vanishing point. Before long you won’t be able to make jokes about “little green men” from Mars, for fear of offending illegal aliens “undocumented” immigrants. Im not even sure you can joke about white people any more, like Martin Mull and Allen Rucker did 20 years ago in A History of White People in America. Not even Sony would risk publishing this right now.
So heres my list of groups or subgroups you can still safely make public jokes about:
1. Jewish mothers.
2. Thats it. (And Scott will have to tell me if Item #1 is in fact correct. But to this point I havent heard the ADL react the way FAIR reacts to anything satirical about Islam.)
Well yes, maybe you can make jokes and the French and Germans and the British, but fashionable opinion holds it against you.
The great John Cleese appeared on Bill Mahers show last weekend, and offered an intelligent discussion of why you cant joke about Mexicans or Muslims, and why its condescending. Plus this: If you make jokes about people who are going to kill you, there is a sort of tendency to hold back a little. (About four minutes long.)
Acceptable: Honkeys, Peckerwoods, and Crackers... oh, and YO MAMA!
“You can make fun of the Irish.
We dont care and are fairly self deprecating.”
I agree and I thing it’s because we like who we are, faults and all.
.
Blondes and gingers.
Ever since that shipyard electrician and a pope started the downfall of the USSR, Poles got pretty impressive.
Fat people; ugly people; the mentally ill and mentally disabled.
Polish jokes and put downs were plenty when we were kids in the 70s.
Funny thing is, polish people are hard working and good with their hands so all the putdowns about something being “Polish” were not accurate.
Well, you can’t tell lawyer jokes... but that’s only because there is no such thing as a “lawyer joke.” They are all absolutely true.
My daughter worked in a staffing firm. Last week a coworker asked about a candidate that she was managing, and wanted to know about them. She used the term “Asian” when describing the candidate, and was fired before the end of the day for discrimination!
The weaker the group, the less appropriate the remark.. What this says about black culture I’ll leave for the star chamber to decide.
hahaha - good one!
Agreed! I worked with a number of Polish people in the granite/marble/stone industry.
Templator was very accurate and reliable, installers were very hard-working, particular and earned every penny they made. I like the Polish workers we had.
My sympathies, FRiend.
PC goes too far when someone like Myron Cohen can’t tell Jewish jokes!!
I think everyone should be allowed to be an “Equal Opportunity Offender”!!
Poles. The media still runs pollack joke headlines.
There’s no room to screw in a lightbulb.
Some advice if your parents’ neighbors want to hide money from their hippie-dippy daughter... put it under a bar of soap.
I don’t get it
They would probably make fun of you right back, then ask you to go with them to get some beers.
That's called having fun, and no one has to get beheaded.
When I was going to college it was getting politically incorrect to tell jokes of anyone so they started telling “Norwegian” jokes
Pretty much you substitute the “Norwegian” for any ethnic/religion/stereotype/group.
That’s going on my Facebook status!
