A government poster encouraging the use of contraception to prevent abortions has prompted a public outcry.
In the advertisement issued by the Ministry of Health and Welfare on Friday, a young couple is seen from behind. The woman glances behind her, smiling, while walking arm in arm with her boyfriend/husband. The man is carrying paper shopping bags and a woman's pink handbag.
Next to the photo, a slogan reads: "Although you leave everything (to men), don't leave the responsibility for contraception (to men)."
Another shorter phrase states: "Contraception is a matter of self-service."
The poster further explains that contraception is a responsibility for both men and women.
After the ministry uploaded the poster on social networking services (SNS) including Facebook, people say the poster tarnishes the image of women by describing them as helpless people who make men take the responsibility.
"This could turn into hatred for women. Why do we have to be seen so selfish and dependent?" wrote one female blogger.
Others say that the slogan can be interpreted as meaning that only women are responsible for contraception.
"It is nonsense because the message underneath says that both men and women should take responsibility for using contraception," another Internet user commented.
Men are also upset, saying that the man in the poster looks like a "slave" doing chores for the woman, such as carrying bags for her.
"Does the slogan imply that men are unreliable in terms of contraception?" asked another blogger.

Everyone is offended by everything.
Part of me wonders if this back and forth between the sexes has been going on for millenia with only recent global consequence being a result of the interconnectedness of society. As a man, I don’t want a clingy, overly-dependent woman but I also don’t want a feminist who sees me as nothing more than a sperm-donor. There has to be a balance between the two, but I don’t think the worldwide media sees it that way.
Well at least they’re not a nation of Flukes.
Sounds like Korea is taking a cue from Japan.
No children, “responsible” birth control, and all the after-effects that goes with this (aging and dying population).
Yes, I would say that's exactly what it implies.
Maybe they could do an alternative set of ads for men, emphasizing that they could be punished with a baby if they assume their sex-partner is taking responsibility for contraception.

As a woman I don’t think women should be servile slave creatures like islam preaches, however, I don’t think the other extreme is acceptable either and is just as bad.
The balance is more of a “Partnership” with each Man and woman in a relationship helping fill each opthers gaps in expertise and wisdom. This begins with both sides knowing their own weaknesses and strengths first followed by their partners. And then a willingness to help and allow to be helped fill in the those gaps in a complmentary manner.
I knew of a relationship that ended in divorace that was finaincially based that the Woman had no business handling the money in the family because she had no fiscal responsibility, but she was a prideful being that demanded that power in the relationship that would have better been left with the husband. She damnded control of the entire family’s economy yet wouldn’t even accept the responsibility of actually writing out the monthly checks.... So they had several utilities shut off occasionally because she refused to even write a check, even though she wouldn’t let her husband do it... Even if there was actually money in the bank to PAY that bill...
Both people in a relationshiop need to be HUMBLE enough to know their won limits and accept HELP from one another, but not to RELY too much on the other and become a BURDEN.
It is a delicate balance, and by our current culture’s “Romanitisation of Relationships” it almost never gets talked about in ANY POP CULTURE MEDIA, and we wonder why Divorace is such a Epidemic.....
My advice to Male Freepers in a pre-marrige relationship, If you Girlfriend EVER refers to herself as a “Princess”....
RUN!!!! RUN LIKE HELL AWAY FROM HER!
Well put, Grace, thank you.
FYI , abortion is illegal but very common in Korea.
