I highly recommend a trip to Crete. It has beautiful beaches excellent food (Italian and Greek), nice people and wonderful weather from March to November.
I think there might be one but, I can’t recall.
I think it’s near some old army base off highway 101 but, can’t think of it.

I'll second that. We took the 3 hour self guided tour at Gettysburg...it took us 5 hours to complete.

I’ve posted here many times about my experience and would love to go back.
Had a chance 4 months ago,on my way back from Mexico/San Diego.
Decided to run over to a restaurant I like in Camarillo and have lunch, then take my favoritest, bestest drive up highway 1, through Cambria and stopped at a wonderful restaurant I’ve been going to for 20+ years “Robin’s”.
I love that place and the two gay gals , who own the place, are great.
After that I meandered home.
My daughter just returned from a vacation in Normandy. She and her husband were there for "Calvados Season", but they covered all the D-Day sites, as well.
They visited the American cemetery and their recollection was much like yours. Beautiful...and solemn...at the same time.
But they also visited the British/Canadian and German cemeteries. We never hear of them. They observed that the mood of the German cemetery was much like Germany: dour, but respectful.
But, to them, the British/Canadian cemetery stole the show (her husband is a Brit). While it used the same simple white cross and Star of David memorial as the USA, each monument had an inscription -- a few words submitted by a close family member.
They photographed some of the most memorable and shared them with us. All were heartfelt, some were heartbreaking.
Mosel valley for me. I lived in Traben-Trarbach for three years. I never took the opportunity to learn about all the history, dating back to Roman times. People there are friendly, and the pace is easy going.
On a nice day, coming over the ridge at Urzig is breath taking...the valley opens up for 10 miles in both directions. Trier to Koblenz was my second home.

The UP isn't what it used to be twenty or so years ago. The developers have scooped up all the available real estate and parceled it out to the "flat land tourists" who build ticky-tacky cabins.

Tell me, is the current rendition of The Caprice decent?
Back in the seventies, when Kirby Atterbury was still alive and running the place, I was a semi-regular at the place everytime I had business in the area (Korbel champagne was one of my clients).
At the time, The Caprice was a magnificent restaurant by every conceivable measure: food, service, ambience...and the VIEW! Golden Gate on the right, Angel Island on the left, the Marina district across the bay.
When Kirby died, I understand it fell on bad times. But an examination of their web page suggests it may be in the midst of a recovery under new ownership.
Jefferson must have been thinking tourist destination. It certainly wasn’t useful as a battlement.
I agree with you; it was definitely worth the day-trip while on a cruise. Included on the tour was a long stop at Salisbury Cathedral, with a guided tour. It made for a wonderful day.
Yes. We were there for a couple weeks before Mubarek was overthrown. It was wonderful. Yes, you can go inside some of the pyramids, but generally, it isn’t attractive. Better is to go to the Valley of Kings and tour the burial chambers whose walls are lined with colorful, intricate hieroglyphs. Abu Simbel was worth he trip. There are pyramids all over the place...outside Memphis there were several large ones including the step pyramid and the “bent” pyramid. Remember, there are several thousand years of history relatively preserved there. We have no complaints about the 2 week stay. We wouldn’t go now...to unstable politically.
I have to tell you, I haven’t a clue as to the names of the restaurants.
I take dates there and usually just pick one of the 4 I like for no particular reason.
I like to hike at Point Bonita, take in the ocean breeze and climb around in the forts and bunkers.
Afterward, I go to one particular place that serves the best damned Bloody Mary, aside from Scoma’s, a most excellent clam chowder and fries.
If the chef I like happens to be working that day, he’ll cook me some piping hot, fresh, potato chips. Garlic and rosemary.
Awwwhhh! Love that place.

I know the best place in the city however and if you ever get a chance my favorite is Gary Danko, the Michael Mina, then Tadich Grill. Well, not really.
Too many great places.
So looked up The Caprice and yep. Been there plenty.
I love the view and always eat outside.
Now, for me, that place is the place if you like rack of lamb or an awesome steak.
Their wine collection is really, really quite good.
Hmmm...I shoukd go there over Christmas for my hike, then drop in.
Can you imagine after a hard day hiking a delicious bowl of hot soup, a couple bloody Mary’s and a rack of lamb?
While taking in the views of the city and the scent of the Bay, at night?
Priceless.
And to think, my Mom wants me to move back to Oklahoma?
