Even the world's most hard-core, fire-breathing conservatives have me baffled. I'll paraphrase John Stossel in harsher language than he used (no conservative he, but he did address the issue) "If you use the term 'African American' you are either gutless or stupid. Gutless because you are afraid to "offend" those looking to be offended, stupid because you've not stopped to ask yourself what the hell this new term is all about."
Why do SO MANY conservatives, even here on this site and even Rush Limbaugh, use this term?
Blacks invented the term to wield power over nonblacks. If I force you to call me by some regal-sounding, magisterial title with 10,000 syllables, then I am wielding power over you. Period.
On the day that I demand to be called a European American of Caucasoid Descent with Scotch/Irish Roots (Roots? Get it? That's funny!) then I'll start using the AA term.
Just how low must you bow when using the term AA, and are you allowed to look the AA in the face when speaking to him?
I mean, I do realize that "they" were surveying the building sites of the pyramids they built from the gliders they invented thousands of years ago, while lowly whites were still stabbing each other over grubs in the forest, but come on!
I don’t know. I think it’s stupid. Also annoying.
I thought that we Irish-Americans were the Potato Heads.
I’m Irish, not a potato head. A drunk Mick, perhaps, but not a potato head.
I prefer and use the term “American-Africans” as it is more descriptive of the situation.
My mother used to call me square-headed Dutchman or hard-headed Dutchman.
Dad came over on the boat and Checked In. Haven’t been able to determine if he entered through Ellis Island or ,I suspect, Chicago.
I may be wrong, so someone jump in if this isn't the case ... colored people have mixed blood, they are not 100% negroid in origin. Personally I use, correctly or incorrectly, the terms black, colored, and high-yellow based on skin tone. Occasionally, I use other terms as well, but I won't use those terms on here.
How about... Tater Salad?
Native American, Irish, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Greek, North African, Middle Easterner, Polynesian, East Asian, Caucasian.
Good questions.
Should be noted that “African American,” if it had a logical meaning, would refer primarily to immigrants from Africa who had become Americans. Same as we refer to Italian-Americans.
For all other groups such designation loses force each generation, and before too long they’re just “Americans” with funny names.
It would also refer to anybody from Africa, which would include Egyptians, Libyans and white South Africans.
But what they mean is a racial term, not a geographical one. I wish they’d just say what they mean.
Blacks asked to be called “Black” in the 1970s, rather than the then pervasive “Negro”.
Fair enough. I can call people what they want to be called.
Once.
“African American” is just a fresh name to escape the stink they left on “Black” with their behavior.
Liberals are not “Progressive.” Blacks are not “African American.”
Own your stink, jerks.
I hate the term people of color. All “people of color” have brown eyes and brown hair. Only people of noncolor have different color eyes and hair
If we want to be super accurate with respects to the true color of skin, brown is more accurate than black, is it not?
Not if your ancestors were Orange from Ulster.
It’s a trap, like all other words used about race. If you use it or don’t use it and are White, you are subject to condemnation.
If Charlize Theron robbed a bank, would the police put out an APB for “6 foot tall African American female”?
Why not?
She is an American citizen from South Africa. She is an African-American.
Oh, refer to their tribe as they wish to be called.
Eventually whatever term they ask you to use will be considered “offensive” and they’ll change it.
Yep, I saw a story about some black guys from Britain. The reporter referred to them as African American.
