How to Train Your Voice to Be More Charismatic
Wall Street Journal ^ | 12-2-14 | Robert Lee Hotz

Scientists are tuning in on the power of the spoken word, seeking the secrets of charisma.

By analyzing the harmonics of pitch, frequency and timbre, researchers at University of California, Los Angeles are discovering how charismatic public speakers use their voices to dominate, rouse and influence a large audience. They are finding that successful politicians in various countries, including Italy, France and Brazil, all share key vocal qualities that strongly affect how people respond to them, independent of the meaning of the words they say or the ideas they express.

In a separate analysis of some prominent business leaders, the researchers also found charismatic patterns in the public speeches of Apple Inc. Chief Executive Tim Cook and the late Steve Jobs .

For speech experts, the voice is an instrument of rare persuasive power, tuned by evolution and culture to communicate far more than words alone convey. Some people are just born with the charismatic qualities that dominate or inspire trust, but voice researchers are confident that at least some of these acoustic elements can be taught.

“You have the capacity to shape your voice in a way that makes people perceive you as a leader,” said UCLA acoustic scientist Rosario Signorello, who conducted the charisma experiments. He presented his work recently at the annual meeting of the Acoustic Society of America in Indianapolis. “It applies to politicians, to CEOs, to everyone who aspires to leadership status.”

I was raised by a Pentecostal pastor, my grandfather. The first time I heard Obama speak I looked at hubby and said.....he’s using the sing song cadence of a preacher. Nothing more, nothing less.

I thought about sending out an office bingo card for the next meeting, but he’s a high mucky-muck. Might not be a good idea! :-)

When in church I simply look at the paper in my hands on which I am writing notes along with looking up scripture. Do you have to be watching them?

A western civ prof in college, simply read the book for 50min at the podium. And he used to clear his throat about every other second.

One time I couldn’t take it, so I counted. 442 times in 50 minutes he went HUH-HUH. God that was so annoying.

Living or being in fear enhances the impact of the emotional destabilization process.

Hillary has taken lessons. You can see the change in her oratory when she maintains her composure, or has not had too much alcohol!

She’s like Baraq.
She can talk Ivy League, midwest, or southern drawl depending on the audience.

“along with looking up scripture.”

There is the key to not falling prey to a charismatic. They will often hold the Bible up and wave it. They often quote scriptures. But they virtually never open it and read it verbatim.

“Let me be clear”
“Make no mistake”
use, “..in terms of...”
use, “..with respect to...”

I had a professor Freshman year in college who constantly said ‘um’. In one class I started tally marking each ‘um’, at 300 I couldn’t take it anymore and left - bought class notes and showed up for the tests.

Hillary, like a lot ow women, has a tendancy to screech when she’s stumping. Also, when tired or speaking too loud.

Talk like a leader, think like a leader and act like a leader.

Get rid of passive words and phrases i.e. “just”, “frankly” & “to be honest” are a few.

Please and other beggar phrases will end the perception of who are.

Long flowery speeches also bug most of us with ADHD.

Make three bullet points as the major article of your presention and have no more two additional minor objectives.

Stop freaking talking about yourself. No one gives a damn.

WIIFM. Whats...In...It...For...Me?

Be a why guy, “why” is the reason for doing anything.

Is that why transformative or traditional excuse making.

Why do you say that?

Why do you want to do that?

What is your expected outcome, if you do this?

Ask excellent questions, obtain superior information and you’ll create deep and meaningful relationships.

How and when are also important factors.

Both you and Tired&Retired have both made interesting comments in this thread regarding the use of speech and stuff to hypnotize, or lead, or perhaps mind-control groups of individuals.

I have recently been involved in a group situation where an organization has been dealing with the behavior and mis-behavior of several individuals who have, in essence created a mini-cult within the organization, to its detriment.

As a result, I find myself trying to even understand all of this stuff. As a club officer, I’m told I’m a terrible leader. Where is one supposed to learn leadership? (The military didn’t want me). I’m obviously a terrible sociopath, not nearly manipulative enough.

I’m beginning to think that the way the world really must work is like some kind of pyramid of sociopathy where the more skilled and effective sociopaths rise to the top, while the gullible and deluded labor away at the bottom.

Perhaps I’m just cynical.

The reason I’m posting this to you two is that I feel like you’ve posted two sides of a very similar coin. Knowledge is power, and I’m feeling a little short of it. Where can I go to learn more about these things you speak of? Books? Websites???

I’m tired of feeling like my life and the lives of my friends (and countrymen) are subject to the wiles of these deceivers. I want to be able to arm myself and others to be able to recognize, resist and fight back against those who manipulate them to gain their own advantages.

Sometimes, it just feel so hopeless.

Any thoughts/comments?

Just start with “How to win Friends and Influence People”.

The rest of this stuff is classroom and pretty in depth.

You have to want to be effective and that requires deep thought, careful consideration and strict but tightly grouped thoughts.

Who are the stakeholders and decision makers? This gets more complicated as you consider the effect of each clique on other cliques for decisions or change. The Johari Concept is useful tool here but, requires really hard work to understand and use constructively.

What is their current state or condition? What are their points of pain(what needs improvement, what is the current state/condition impairing and what are the consequences if no forward momentum is achieved)

Where do they need to go? What direction?
How will the recognize it? How can they measure it? What should be the meaningful outcome?

How do they acquire it? Whst is that path line or arc of achivement?
When is the date or dates of accomplishment

Blah, blah, blah

As you can see it gets very complicated but, that is a bit of my approach in organizations and in the current organization that I am scheduled to take over leadership for, in 2016.

I’ll have my goals outlined by June 1st and begin the orocess of influencing those who and want to help achieve the objectives I’ll be setting for my term.
