To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hello Kitty, the new £210 million theme park centred around the iconic character in east Chinas Zhejiang province opened its doors for a special inauguration ceremony. Hello Kitty Park will be China's first large scale amusement park scheduled to open to the public on New Year's day. My God that’s terrifying. I’m a fan of manga and anime in general, but that’s just terrifying in a third-world sort of way.

I don’t find it that way at all. In fact I think this is very smart and will probably make a ton of money. 210 million is a drop in the bucket for this. I am just surprised that they decided to begin a capitalistic economy........and we are hated by the World....yeah right. Great job China!!!!

Only China could take something as fun and cute as Hello Kitty, and make it terrifying and devoid of joy.

I've visited China several times over the last 30 years, the most recent being earlier this year. All my visits have been to the regions within an hour or two of Hong Kong...including Guangzhou,a city of about 10 million that's a couple of hours from Hong Kong.
From what I've seen,China would, apart from some modern buildings in several major cities, have to advance 200 years in order to qualify as "primitive".Although I've never seen it it's easy for me to imagine how dirty, dreary and depressing this Hello Kitty thing is.

Looks positively Orwellian to me.
BTW, China has some incredible national attractions that would be far more interesting to visit than this, such as the Forbidden City in Bejing, the Great Wall, the Han pottery figure museum outside of Xian and the Li River region.
Still, I suppose the Orwellian Hello Kitty theme park was meant to appeal to kids.
