Yesterday, my girlfriend and I borded an Amtrak passenger train in Stockton to travel to visit her friends in Visalia for Thanksgiving. Amtrak offers its passengers free WIFI as part of their amenities on the trip. As part of the log on, it specifies that Amtrak block access to "offensive" web sites, but otherwise allows free access to the Internet. I agreed to their conditions and found myself connected.
Four attempts to connect to FreeRepublic resulted in being notified that my browser could not connect to the server! Thinking FR might be down, I turned off my WIFI, and reverted to my cellular connection, and was instantly connected to FreeRepublic. Turn on WIFI, no FreeRepublic. MSNBC, there. CNN, likewise. There. But FR, is BLOCKED as an offensive website! I am offended.
Proxy Servers are your friend.
It’s blocked on yahoo too
Not to defend AMTRAK, but they do take a beating quite regularly around here.
Trust you to miss the point. My iPad is cellular connection capable without the iPhone WIFI. but you'll be happy to know the vast majority of the passengers on the full train were using Apple products. Very few had anything else. It was amazing seeing how many were online.
Then take the opportunity to troll DUh for LOLZ.
And write a sternly worded letter to the CEO.
It’s their wifi. So what?
CNN was there, the default news site on Amtrak landing page, wouldn't you know. I'm going to check the others tomorrow on our return leg.
And CHI-TOWN is going to be the hub city.
Oh, I agree. . . but Amtrak is supposed to be independent. Apolitical, doncha know? Sorta like the Post Office. LOL! Betcha GLBT advocacy and sites of similar ilk have free access.
Register a complaint.
Was FR not available on the cell carrier network?
I ALSO have a WiFi capable iPad(LOL - you said that as if it’s something special) My wife and two of our children have one too. We also have a Mac as a main workstation in our home for everyone to use.
Usually when I run into stupid web filters like that, I just turn off WLAN, and use the cell net, rather than running to the internet to bitch about it. You seem to be so defensive. Usually you’re more friendly. Have you had a bad day, or something? lol
Commie run gubmint train.Go figure.
Why use the parasitic subsidized transport for the freeloaders?
I ride Amtrak several times a month (three days ago) and I have NEVER had a problem accessing FR.
“Its their wifi. “
Their means the tax payers.
They are taking sides in the political discourse by censoring political discussion to benefit liberals. THAT we should cry out against. . . loudly and resoundingly.
Sorry to hear that SM.
FR us hardly offensive. Well... I’m SURE it’s offensive to any Progressive that might read it, but the mods do a good job of getting rid of overtly bad comments.
Hope you are feeling better. :)
Because my Girlfriend and I were tired of a 4 1/2 hour one-way drive, that three times in the last seven round trips we almost bought the farm, because of idiot drivers changing lanes into us, driving crazy, or driving drunk on i-5 or California HWY 99. Trips for which the cost of gasoline was 50% more than two round trip tickets on the train which took just 3 hours. . . Add to all that this trip was for the day before and after Thanksgiving where the traffic on those two freeways would have been an order of magnitude worse than when the idiots tried to kill us.
Besides, the Amtrak subsidy is probably now a lot less than the "bail-out" cost of all those incomplete "shovel ready" construction projects along California's freeways and bridges that were started but no one ever seems to be working onyet leave traffic flows impeded due to blocked lanes, k-bars, and unwidened construction lanes, that have been there for five years. . . No doubt waiting for Obama shovels.
