The yet-to-be-released Apple Watch has been making news for quite some time now. Very recently, the smartwatch has made it to the coveted Time magazine's top 25 new inventions of 2014.
Based on the Time magazine list, the Apple Watch completely channels the idea of running a computer on the wrist. This is achieved by utilising a novel interface with a combination of touchscreen and physical buttons. Moreover, the Apple Watch is considered to be a fashion accessory, in addition to representing the latest technology in wearable gadgets arena, according to Time Magazine via Phone Arena.
The magazine has also listed down a couple of features of the smartwatch such as sending and receiving of messages, finding directions and supporting mobile-based payments, among others. The smartwatch can also double as a fitness and health tracker. The Apple Watch's release date is speculated to be on Valentine's Day 2015.
In addition to the Apple Watch, Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 has also made it to the top 25 new inventions list. The 2-in-1 business-centric tablet features a humongous 12-inch display. With the help of the optional Type Cover and the built-in kickstand, the Surface Pro 3 can easily be turned into a laptop. The device is powered by an Intel processor and backed by 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM. In addition, there is a 512 GB of internal storage capacity, making it all the more appealing for the tablet lovers. Very interestingly, instead of pitting the Surface Pro 3 against the Apple iPad, Microsoft has released ads pitting its tablet against the MacBook Air. Needless to say, this strategy is mainly to pinpoint the 2-in-1 functionality of the Pro 3.
Another interesting addition to the top 25 list is the latest Blackphone. The handset garnered interest from the tech crowd, mainly because of the security that it guarantees. The device runs on a forked version of Google's Android OS; hence, it reduces the vulnerability to attack of any kind. Furthermore, the phone calls, text messages and browser history via the Blackphone are encrypted. Apart from the aforementioned products, the top 25 list includes the following items:
The Real-Life Hoverboard
Mangalyaan
High-beta fusion reactor
Witricity
3D Printing
Coolest Cooler
Lumo Lift
BMW i3
Ringly
Pillpack

I cannot get excited what a Communist propaganda sheet has to say about ANYTHING.
I cannot get excited what a Communist propaganda sheet has to say about ANYTHING.
I wouldn’t call most of those “inventions”
The Apple IWatch is just a small computer with a wrist-strap that requires you to have an IPhone to use.
That is not an invention.
I'm sure that's because the Surface Pro 3 is just as or more expensive than competing laptops.
neither is the BMW i3
There is nothing new on the list it is a list of manufactured devices..... some of which are remarkable
3D printing’s been around for years.
They made a watch that you can’t buy, and that no one has used, and whose specs are almost unknown, as on of the “best” inventions?
Nope. Media definitely not in Apple’s back pocket. Not at all...
Exactly how is an unreleased product, the Apple IWatch, a top invention?
Well that and its an actual computer with computer guts and not full of ARM and mobile guts.
Well consider this. The airplane was definitely the top invention of 1903. Yet you couldn't buy one, nobody (other than the inventors) ever used one and the specs were virtually unknown. In fact, most people thought it was a hoax and that it was impossible for such a contraption to get off the ground.
Don't overlook the Apple iWatch. WithIn a couple years, they are going to be selling hundreds of millions of these. They really do have the potential to shake up the tech industry, just like the iPod, iPhone and iPad before it.
People laugh at the iWatch because they mistakenly think it's about telling the time. Well most people own iPhones not because it can make a phone call but for all the other things that it does.
Having your data wearable and always on demand will be the main selling futures.
Look for it to move away from the wrist however. Most people will be wearing it on a necklace and eventually will have it surgically implanted on their body. It sounds creepy today but that is where we are headed.
"Coveted Time Magazine" - really?
Is that the best they can do? There have been numerous inventions in the medical field and others. Electronic gadgets do not constitute the greatest inventions.
You can wear it while riding the Real Life Hoverboard that you can't buy, either.
The Wright Flyer was the first heavier than air craft.
The Apple Watch is not the first smartwatch.
That “hoverboard” is a complete joke.
Just too many guys my age that wont let that stupid thing go, and will slobber over anything that carries the name, no matter how phony it is.
The question is whether it will be any more functional than the half dozen models already on the market.
Ditto for smartphones and tablets. Apple not the first to make those either but they were the first in each case to perfect them and turn them into a consumer product with mass appeal.
And so it shall be with the iWatch.
I want to see their 2009 and 2004 lists.
