My dad moved us to Southern California so he could help build the P-38. My uncle made the trip too.
They were too old to sign up for the war, so they did the next best thing.

I had an old friend who fought on Iwo Jima - one hell of a gentleman with a lot of stories (very few about being in the war though). Old age took him from us a few years ago.

My Dad was a pilot of a landing craft at Iwo...He was also the ship's photographer. I grew up with pictures like these that dad kept in a shoebox. Here's one...Dad is on the far right.

My Father was in the 498th Bomb Group based on Saipan. See pix 39, if I remember correctly. I still have original bomb damage assessment pictures from the bombing raids over Japan. Incredible piece of history.
