My dad moved us to Southern California so he could help build the P-38. My uncle made the trip too.
They were too old to sign up for the war, so they did the next best thing.

I had an old friend who fought on Iwo Jima - one hell of a gentleman with a lot of stories (very few about being in the war though). Old age took him from us a few years ago.

My Dad was a pilot of a landing craft at Iwo...He was also the ship's photographer. I grew up with pictures like these that dad kept in a shoebox. Here's one...Dad is on the far right.

Out of the gaping mouths of Coast Guard and Navy Landing Craft, rose the great flow of invasion supplies to the blackened sands of Iwo Jima, a few hours after the Marines had wrested their foothold on the vital island. 1945.

Thanks for posting this thread.
We know the history, but to these guys, they were living it one day at a time. And every day was full of danger. The crashed planes are testament to that.
The Banzai charge by the Japs on 3/21/45 on the pilot and crew tents is heartbreaking. Never heard of that before seeing these pictures. Just when you think the island is secure.
That’s why we took very few Jap prisoners in the Pacific. They wanted to die, and we wanted to accommodate them.
By contrast, in the European theater, we took hundreds of thousands of German POW by the end of WW2.
The bulk of our 400,000 KIA in WW2 were killed between D-Day in June, 1944 and V-J day in August, 1945—14 months.
Found a paper in my parents attic from Feb. 1945.
The KIA, WIA, and MIA lists from one county in northern NJ was more than one page long with tiny print in vertical columns.
