SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Investigators said one person is dead after a detached truck tire bounded across Route 28 Friday morning and smashed into an oncoming car.

Officials said the accident happened just before 11 a.m. near the Shaler Water Facility.

Channel 11’s Alan Jennings reported the tire came from a Ford F-450 with a tarp-covered trailer that was heading southbound on Route 28.

Channel 11’s Rick Earle has learned the victim’s car was driving north when the tire hopped over the jersey barrier and hit the driver’s side windshield.

A man was driving and his wife was in the back seat because she has a boot on her leg.

The Medical Examiner has identified the victim as 75-year-old Robert Lofink, of Gibsonia.

--snip--

Police said the driver of the truck -- identified as 23-year-old Eric Gonzales-Huerta, did not stay on the scene of the accident.

--snip--

Gonzales-Huerta did not have a valid driver's license and neither the truck nor the trailer was insured, police said.

Ah, Flatbush, not so good for a while. There was a small riot at the King’s Plaza Mall a while ago, did you read about it?

I’ve been in Gravesend, born at Victory Memorial which is now closed.

What do you mean by WX?

Oh sorry, WX is pilot talk for weather ... since you work the flight line and all ... nope, didn’t hear of any riot. I love reading old copies of the Brooklyn Eagle... one time I spent hours reading the stories and some obits from the 1860’s ... real interesting.

I only did that job for one winter season. The travel back and forth was brutal, and more than half the time I had to walk from the company’s building to Federal Circle, to take the Airtrain to Howard Beach and get on the A train. I don’t miss it too much, especially working 20 hours at a time sometimes.

Here’s the second time from the NY Post: http://nypost.com/2014/02/17/teens-go-berserk-at-kings-plaza-mall-again/

Thank you.

I get annoyed when the news is more interested in being PC than in giving us pertinent facts.

I thought that in order to register a motor vehicle, it had to have the state minimum level of insurance. If and when that insurance lapsed, the insurance company would immediately notify the DMV, who in turn would alert the authorities who then would move to find it and get it off the road.

So what's the your point? If the guy is in the country illegally, does he really give a crap if his truck is legal?

The cops don't have checkpoints to catch every uninsured/unregistered vehicle. Like most other crime, they only catch them for that 'after the fact.'

There was an incident here in Pittsburgh a number of years ago where the cops just happened to spot a construction truck on an interstate hauling a trailer that was held on by freaking duct tape!

The occupants were all illegals. I never heard what happened to them, but I'd bet they are still here undercutting American wages.

But the sun can't possibly have any effect on the climate whatsoever! It's all the fault of humans, and anybody that thinks otherwise is a terrorist and wants all whales to die!!!

Do I really need /sarc?

Stuff flying over the median can kill you real dead in an instant.

My husband was stopped at a red light in his one day old new car. An 18 wheeler truck coming up behind him lost a tire and it hit his back bumper. It hit so hard that it bent the frame of his new car and totaled it.

In my years of driving I have seen tires/wheels crossing the highway a number of times from traffic on the other side

On June 14, 1980, heading North on I-240 in Memphis, a semi truck wheel from a South bound semi came off and began bouncing across the median toward my car. It hit in front of my car and bounced over it to continue behind me. I was seconds from an accident. It was one of several bad omens for my first wedding day. I should have taken heed.

I understand. Still it could happen to anyone. I have seen a number of tires disintegrate at high speed and it is a wonder more people are not hurt or killed by them. I dodged one from a boat trailer this past summer on I10.

Honestly, this could happen to anyone.

Ok that's a given fact.

The legality of the driver doesn’t mean much.

It means a lot actually it does. Several points to make. He had no license thus should not have been driving any vehicle on any public road. He had no insurance thus the victims family is S.O.L. and left without income or justifiable compensation including the other passengers bills and loss. Had he stayed home in good old Mexico and came here legally, abiding by our laws, acquired a valid drivers license, liability insurance, etc then he would have been held to the minimal legal standards everyone else in this nation but an illegal aliens are held too. Now after posting bond he can skip town with new identity waiting at destination or go home to Mexico and come back as a different name. Repeat next accident. It's happening way too much in everything from car accidents to murder.

Eighteen wheelers throwing a recap would kill you well enough.

Indeed they can and do. That is why the drivers besides specialized licensing must first before getting on the road do a Pre-Trip Inspection and sign a legally binding sworn statement of having done such plus the trucks owner must carry carry liability insurance.
