Best Buy tells Amazon: Take that!
CNN ^ | November 20, 2014: 9:48 AM ET | Jesse Solomon

Best Buy's results are particularly poignant for a company that has fallen victim in recent years to the so-called "showroom effect," in which customers visit stores to check out products in-person, and then go home and buy online somewhere else like Amazon.

Shares of Best Buy jumped 8% in morning trading. The stock took a beating early in the year as investors soured on its turnaround plans, but its since clawed back dramatically, and is now only a few percentage points away from breaking even.

Compare that to Amazon's stock, which has fallen almost 20% this year as quarterly losses mount and investors grow increasingly anxious that the company's big investments in such things as its Fire Phone aren't paying off.

I shop Amazon a lot...do love Costco return policy...don’t have to send bad printer to mfg...bring to them...they replace...I am looking at SONO system now...was thinking of going to BB but hate the place...may just purchase online

You don't even have to go home now. My Amazon app lets me scan the barcode of an item in the store. It comes up with that same identical item on Amazon. If the price is lower - I can one click "buy it now", and boom! I'm Done.

However - Best Buy did match that price last year when I needed a toner printer. So yeah. I went ahead and bought it at BB.

Pest Puy needs to turn down the overwhelming obnoxious throbbing of hippity-hop “music” that assaults you as you walk into their store.

Indeed. I lost count of how many times I was passing by and considered going in but didn't because of that racket.

“My orders get here in 2 days even on Sundays.”

Isn’t that cool? Just last Sunday, my replacement toner cartridge and a new wireless mouse arrive on Sunday morning.

Just two days after I ordered them.

Good insight. I do that a lot too unless the savings are huge online.

Wow! You research products just like I do. I want to see the connections and read the instruction manual before I buy something.

I once went to a Circuit City to ask a question about an item. I already knew more about it than the salesman did.

it's been awhile, so I don't remember exactly the problem. My point is:

There is nothing on Amazon I want that I can't buy elsewhere. They were trying to get me to jump through hoops, so I left. If Amazon was exclusively selling something I really wanted, I suppose I'd figure it out. AFAIK, Amazon is not exclusively selling anything I really want.

Put another way:

Amazon's help may be "fast and easy", but it still wasn't as fast and easy as just going to Ebay.

I wonder if they will deliver on Thanksgiving.

Not that I plan on wanting or needing a Thanksgifing day delivery, but...

For me, eBay is a pain in the neck. I have not used eBay in many years. I have ordered so much from Amazon that people there, probably say, “ here she is again.”. I know my Postal and FedEx people say that to me. I have one click ordering which is wonderful. Never had any trouble with it.

I’ve gotten holiday deliveries. Which I thought was kind of a waste actually, if I hadn’t seen the carrier I would have never bothered to look in the box and it would have sat there until the next day.

I’ll buy online and have it shipped any day to avoid this: “Let me tell you about the warranty.” No, thank you. “The warranty covers three years of replacement...” No, thank you. I don’t want to buy a warranty. “It’s only X percent of the purchase price and...”

You aren’t getting away till you listen to that endless spiel. Then when you get up to the register, the clerk starts over again. “Oh, are you sure you don’t want to buy a warranty?”

That’s why I stopped shopping there.

Amazon has a distribution center in my state. We get charged for the sales tax for Amazon orders.

One time I tried to get a Best Buy store to match their own online price and they wouldn’t so I ordered the item right there in the store.

Walmart is the same way. Often items I'm looking for will be cheaper to order online, then get via Site-to-Store (within the hour). Stupid, since the item has to be fished out of storage in the back, instead just fronted and faced on the shelves out front.

So if Best Buy matched the price for the same item as Amazon, and sales tax was equal, what was the cost difference due to? Warranty Program? Something else?

I’m also in a state that now taxes Amazon. Given the minimal difference in pricing on many items, it is generally easier to drive a mile to any one of the available big retailers and purchase a product rather than waiting to have something delivered from Amazon.
