This is pretty far off topic, except for the ending, but get thee the movie
"Citizen X". It's about Russia's, and probably the world's, biggest serial murderer with 52 deaths to his name - all in the '80s and '90s. Check out the reviews of this 1995 sleeper.
The pertinent part here is after he's caught and convicted, TWO YEARS later the guy is executed. No ACLU wringing their hands or tearful candlelight vigils, just a short walk through the cell block hallway. Don't want to give the ending away, but it was a no fuss, no muss deal, unlike the travesty reported here.

Justice delayed is not justice. 22 years. More than twice the lifespan of the innocent child. If he wasn’t on death row for all those years but instead out in the general population, would justice have been served quicker?
