John Melloy | @whatevermelloy

As we close the book on the silver anniversary of CNBC, the company's digital arm is looking ahead to the next 25 years and the trends, challenges and innovations that will define that era.

The following are companies best positioned to capitalize on these waves. Some may look familiar, while others will be a total surprise. You answered this post 5 years later? There is no EMC. They are now part of Dell Technologies. As a former DC director, I also tossed EMC a couple of times. Then again, I also tossed IBM, Hitachi and NetAop from my DC.

Silly me, I wasn't paying attention to the date. Shame on me.

I also tossed IBM. Never needed to toss HDS or NetApp. Anytime I needed to keep them on their toes I just brought in a few niche players for proof of concepts, let HDS and NetApp's storage engineers see them in my data center and magically I had a whole lot more negotiating strength with them.
