The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

I was notified that Arrowhead1952 needs prayers urgently. He had an accident,was in intensive care, and has a long recovery even if he gets better. Please say a prayer for our FRiend.

Just pulled most of my containers earlier in the week...switching to composting for the winter and getting a workable work shop in order. Looking forward to next season!
How do you wrap up an asparagus bed? Leave the died-down foliage in place? Or clear it out?
Mulch with tree-leaves, or not? I've read both suggestions but don't know the rationale so I can't evaluate it.
I'm in round-about USDA 6B or 7, have already had light frosts but my asparagus fronds are still green and upright with just a little bit of yellowing/slumping, so I have time to decide what to do.

Typhoon Nuri, along with its reincarnation as a non-tropical system, appears likely to combine with several other factors to direct multiple rounds of cold, Arctic air into the Midwest and eastern U.S. during the remainder of November.
Alaska forecasts (specific areas) - looks kind of rough. Fans of Deadliest Catch will be seeing some storm footage - the ships from “Deadliest Catch” are all out at sea fishing for king crab, including the Northwestern, Time Bandit, Wizard, Cornelia Marie, Cape Caution, Seabrooke, and the Saga.
It’s 45 degrees here in Massachusetts, and we’re expecting a delivery of firewood next week. Most of the leaves are gone, and sunset should be at 4:32.

I need to order some row covers and plant some more rye or maybe winter wheat. Have been raking leaves over into the raised beds for compost.

My greenhouse is about winter ready. I have tomatoes and herbs in there. Outside, I still have about ten cucuzzi babies. I wish they would get big before the first freeze which might be next week.
My sweet potatoes are fingerlings..ugh. I still need to move them into the greenhouse. We've had about 3 inches of rain this week, but today the sun is out. My lettuce, broccoli, asian stuff, spinach, etc really loved the rain.
I’ve never grown asparagus, but perhaps someone else has. Sorry!
Just saw this on the TX board re: Arrowhead1952. I will definitely double up on the prayers:
Arrowhead (John) fell off a 20’ ladder at work, onto his head, and has a severe brain injury!
Broke all the bones in his face and skull, broke his shoulder blade and some ribs.
His last post was 10/20 in the morning. He fell about 2pm that same day and was LifeFlighted to the hospital; then, after about 6 hours of surgery, he went directly to ICU. It was touch and go for days in critical condition.
After 2 weeks in ICU he has been transferred to a Specialty Neurological Rehab center in Austin, as of 11/3.
He can move his arms and legs, so no spinal injury, but he is not cognizant. Sometimes he can respond to “can you squeeze my hand?”, sometimes not. His daughter is getting ready to go back home.
The nurses are calling them every day. Small improvements are noticed, such as he sat up for 10 seconds today, but no one has a prognosis. Brain injuries heal how they heal, when the heal, if they heal....3 to 6 months at least.
PRAY HARD, please!!!! And spread the word to your prayer lists.
So sorry to hear about Freeper Arrowhead1952. Have always considered myself to be his ‘neighbor’, though I’m probably a hundred miles or more from him. Please send my regards and keep us updated as to his progress.
Too dark to check the garden when I get home after work each day, so look forward to the weekends, still have ripening tomatoes and peppers and need to get going on planting some cold-weather crops - just too many things to catch up on during the weekend.
Oh, how terrible! Prayers are on the way for John and his family.
I have an idea rattling around in my mind for a semi green house using the retaining wall behind my raised beds some one by two frames and plastic and row covers with hinges at the bottom.
It would be kinda like a cold frame, only taller. The taller side/retaining wall I would just have to raise like a chest freezer, and reach in to harvest stuff. There is an outdoor electric recepticle to plug in and use a light bulb for heat.
I also need to get some straw for mulch.
Cut down the last years bushy asparagus plants about 1” above the ground, grind them up for compost.
Spread about four to six inches of leaves or straw over your bed (don’t let it get compacted under the snow this year), just turn it lightly with a grass rake or fork when it starts to look tight.
Add about another 4-6 inches of leaves or straw about mid February, this gives your asparagus plants better cover to push through this spring and so you should get fatter better spears.
This has worked for me the last 14 years.
If your adult asparagus has put out little red berries, keep them ,, the seed inside has come true for me every year.

Ihave the same problem to many things to do and not enough time to do it.
Remember where the sun is late in the day in January-February. We have great late day sun and reflection from the lake into our little beach house where our plants were started last January. The beach house has windows south and west.
We’re buried in oak, sycamore and other tree leaves and only half are down. I am blowing the leaves into wind rows, then scooping them up with a big trash can, then into the burn barrels. As long as the breeze is light, I can burn safely...
