An 11-year-old hunter from Oceola Township, Michigan, took a rare albino 12-pointer with a crossbow last week while hunting with his father. The albino buck was well known in the area, but Gavin Dingman ended up being the lucky hunter to harvest it. Sadly, the celebration ended for Dingman and his family, as they became the subject of death threats and social media backlash.
"My dad was just like, 'Take a deep breath. Are you sure you can take the shot? If you're not 100 percent, we don't want to injure it,' Dingman told the Livingston Daily on Monday. The boy explained that he'd been quite nervous, but he harvested a six-point buck last year, and his father, Mick, was confident in his abilities. Quite a few of the guys in the neighborhood were trying to get it," Mick added.
The family was making arrangements for a full body mount of the animal to be made as a (very large) reminder of the young hunters success. The Livingston Daily story even quoted the boy's father as saying, "He kind of feels like a rock star right now. Everyone is calling, all of the hunting shows and hunting magazines." But social media backlash had cast a dark pall over the boy's experience by the time OutdoorHub spoke to Mick Dingman on Tuesday. "We've had death threats and everything else that you can imagine," he said.
The OutdoorHub reporter expressed his regret and wrote, "Hopefully not too long from now, Gavin and his family can look back on this hunt with only pride and good memories."
Your observation is a good one. I’m not negative about deer hunting, as controlling the deer population is important. The only trophy shoot I’ve negatively commented on involved a woman who shot a lion and acted like a child afterwards.
I criticized her based on the attitude she expressed via photographs and online.
The kid has that “Scott Farkis” look. No wonder he’s hated.
USED to be =)
The meat won’t go to waste anyway. A full body mount is just a carefully removed hide over a form. Its going to be a pricey mount but very cool.
I would go with a mount of it jumping over a split rail fence.
I’m impressed by the entire scenario. The father was right by his side....but it was the young mans decision. Congrats kid!!
There will be at least one more albino taken during gun season this year.
The real screeching starts when the first couple of wolves are taken. The left went ballistic last year. We’ve even got 2 proposals on our ballot dealing with wolf hunting.
Hubby and I have different views on this. I say it’s like shooting something with a disability, it’s unique and shouldn’t be hunted. He said there’s one around here and people want it harvested so it won’t pass on a genetic abnormality.
Winter camo
A deer is a deer, this one just happened to have a genetic flaw........Like the article says, other hunters had their eyes on it so if it hadn't been this kid, it would have been someone else.
Maybe it can be donated to a natural history museum for mounting.
This brings to mind an episode of “Newhart” about the rare appearance of a great albino elk. The townspeople are overjoyed when the elk is sighted in the area after an absence of several years, because they believe it brings good luck for the coming year. Their joy is short lived, however, when Bob accidentally runs it over.
“Imagine you’re a deer.”

Bro Dave Gardner “Daddy, you’re not going to shoot Bambi?”
they breed with regular whitetails and some of them look brown/white patterns like cows
The other deer probably shoved it out from behind a bush because it was drawing unwanted attention to the whole herd. LOL
For some unknown reason I think you’re neither Southern nor a man or you wouldn’t have asked such a dumb question. I believe your name should be “Newbie Troll”.
But is is FAR from unique. Uncommon at best. And a deer with a disability is another way to describe ‘dinner’ for something. Hunter/wolf/other.
I get the ampromorphozing. We all saw Bambi. But that’s a cartoon written by animal rights nuts and this situation is the real world.
This kid saved a cow somewhere for another day because he put 100 pounds of meat in the family fridge. Hindus consider them even more sacred than Bambi. But the bottom line is they are both cute sources of protein to someone or something.
FR has been a favorite for SEIU trolls for years. These are people who are paid to stir the pot.
Best possible outcome.
