An 11-year-old hunter from Oceola Township, Michigan, took a rare albino 12-pointer with a crossbow last week while hunting with his father. The albino buck was well known in the area, but Gavin Dingman ended up being the lucky hunter to harvest it. Sadly, the celebration ended for Dingman and his family, as they became the subject of death threats and social media backlash.
"My dad was just like, 'Take a deep breath. Are you sure you can take the shot? If you're not 100 percent, we don't want to injure it,' Dingman told the Livingston Daily on Monday. The boy explained that he'd been quite nervous, but he harvested a six-point buck last year, and his father, Mick, was confident in his abilities. Quite a few of the guys in the neighborhood were trying to get it," Mick added.
The family was making arrangements for a full body mount of the animal to be made as a (very large) reminder of the young hunters success. The Livingston Daily story even quoted the boy's father as saying, "He kind of feels like a rock star right now. Everyone is calling, all of the hunting shows and hunting magazines." But social media backlash had cast a dark pall over the boy's experience by the time OutdoorHub spoke to Mick Dingman on Tuesday. "We've had death threats and everything else that you can imagine," he said.
The OutdoorHub reporter expressed his regret and wrote, "Hopefully not too long from now, Gavin and his family can look back on this hunt with only pride and good memories."
Why not just wait for a normal one?
Without it’s natural camouflage the deer would not have lasted very much longer!!!
As long as they eat the venison...who cares?????? Is it that LIBs love mutants or something. The albino was just waiting to be whacked...no camouflage. Nature wanted it dead.
I agree completely....but people are going to put human traits on animals....go figure!!
Up that way coyotes would have gotten it eventually. According to the DNR white or Albino deer are actually among the more common albino animals. Something like 1 in every 20,000 which means there must be a couple dozen running around Michigan right now.
To liberals hunting is associated with those “evil” conservatives so it doesn’t matter that they’re threatening an 11 year old boy. He hunts so therefore he’s a young right-winger in training so he’s fair game to them. Sick losers.
I’ve read some of those comments on Twitter and Facebook. People are ignorant. It’s amazing that deer survived as long as it did. You probably don’t want it to reproduce, anyway.
Because it’s a deer in hunting season. Why not make every deer with a unique special and thus off limits? And cows?
Bingo. Albino animals do not live long in the wild for a number of reasons.
Trophy hunters are psycho.
I hunt for food, fun, and management.
Is it worse to kill an albino? At least this way it can be stuffed and preserved, if someone wants to.
Ever notice that on every single thread involving a trophy animal, someone just HAS to make excuses for why the animal in question should have been let go?
Awfully odd thing to happen without fail on a conservative website.
And couldn’t killing for ‘fun’ be defined as ‘psycho’ too by someone?
Reverse racism!
Because that wouldn’t be as awesome. Good for him.
Wouldn’t it have been racist NOT to shoot it just because it was white?
The only difference between this one and the millions of others running around the state is lack of color. Albino deer are fairly common. I’ve seen one from a distance myself (when I lived in Oceola county in fact)
Its kind of like swans. Never mind that mute swans are an invasive species and nuisance animal, people still get all misty eyed about the idea of hunting them apparently because they’re white.
The Left only supports campaigns against cyberbullying of homosexuals. They freely exhibit two-minute hate for Sarah and Bristol Palin (using the C-word, B-word, S-word, are more misogyny). Same with other “enemies of the cause”.
My son in law is still waiting for a 12 pointer. The head of a nice 8 pointer hangs in the family room.
