Help! How can we kill fleas in our house?

Help Freepers! How can we effectively completely eliminate fleas from the house. We are getting rid of the cat immediately. A long time ago, one could buy Lindane, but I believe that has been banned. Would appreciate any advice on how to rid the house permanently of the little buggers. To save you words, I already know about he egg cycle thing from previous experience. Just can't find any Lindane.

I have ‘fostered’ up to ‘blank’ number of kitties in my house for years. Found the best flea-buster NON-TOXIC, natural product that does work: http://www.cedarcide.com/pests/fleas-control-methods/
OR
http://www.cedarcide.com
It is called BEST YET.
I bought the ‘fogger’, as my place is large. It works like a champ.
You can call Cedar Cide and probably have as nice a conversation as I did w/a pleasant rep.
I have used the largest jug of Best Yet during the flea-season(s). The fogger makes it go a long, long way.
Just to let you know, I used every conceivable product for years before finding CEDAR CIDE....and, the foster-kitties I care for are allowed outside where there are grass-fleas (The property is enclosed. They cannot get off the property.)
I hope you try it, and don’t throw out the kittie because of a pest you can control.

I thought that was for lice on kiddies. Does it work for fleas on kitties? The OP has a kitty, not kiddies. Then again, maybe he has kiddies too. If so, I hope they don’t get lice. They’re harder to get rid of.

We have 2 small dogs, they get a tab flea med monthly. They think it’s a treat. Same goes for the heart worm med.

Dawn original dish soap smother’s fleas on critters Vet recommended for our small female Morkie. Who seldom needs bathing, they don’t develop the smell other dogs do. Peekapoo smells in 3 days after a bath.

To get rid of a flea infestation problem:

1. Treatment needs to be done ALL at the same time.
2. Remove and wash in HOT water all pet bedding, if it can’t be properly laundered toss it.
3. Yes, like others have said...bomb the house with no one or pets inside. Turn off and extinguish all pilot lights first!
4. Treat the cat with a vet approved flea control product. OTC spot-on products have had deadly side effects. Best to get either Advantage or Revolution from the vet.
5. Vacuum, DAILY for several weeks. This should get most emerging new fleas that the bombing missed. Vacuum like President Reagan was coming to visit. No need for a knock down spray if you vacuum. Research actually shows that vacuuming is just as effective as sprays or bombs.

You should see and immediate improvement in about 10 days.

Lastly, maintain flea treatment on the cat for a minimum of 4 months to be sure to completely break the cycle and keep the cat. Don’t be fooled that the flea’s go away in the winter time, especially if you have an indoor/outdoor cat. If that’s the case maintaining flea control year round will keep your home flea free. Most of the spot-ons like Advantage or Revolution actually sort of turn the cat into a walking pesticide prevention program.

I tend to like Revolution as it prevents all kinds of pest and not just fleas.

— I used to go nuts over fleas too. No more. I have four cats in my house that go outdoors and associate with a stray. No fleas. New medicine applied once a month. At the risk of looking like a bad plug, it’s called ‘Revolution’.

Back when a relative of mine took a dog home [my property, but she refused to see it that way], fleas and ticks were REALLY bad. [Along with constant barking, poop, terrorizing neighbors, harassing drivers, destroying gardens, killing cats, etc. Who wouldn’t want that?]

we had a cat initiated flea attack. we did get rid of the cat, but then also got rid of the fleas in one sot.

we used plain old flea bombs in the infected room, multiple i recall, but you have to ec=vacuate for a while as they work.

then, we brought in an exterminator who hosed down our whole lot with a liquid containing nematodes i believe. that worked, never had a re infestation.

not exactly sure what a nematode is or how it works, but it worked.

You have been given some good advise about the flea bombs but the problem started because you let the cat go outside. Cats need to live inside and if you can’t handle a litterbox........ then I think the cat is screwed.

Be careful with the flea treatment on the cat, we killed a can because we put too much on him. Also you can spray your yard to kill fleas before they get into you house. You can bring fleas in on your own legs and feet, they need to be eliminated out there too.

the free method:

one plastic grocery bag with no tiny holes in it

fruit and vege skins and waste (smelly stuff good)

Put fruit in bag and set bag wide open on table or floor

Every 30 minutes sneak up to the bag and seal it by the neck with your hand leaving air in bag like a balloon.

Squish the fleas with fingers from outside of bag, which remains clean and dry, letting air out of neck slowly as you do so.

Reopen bag fully wide and repeat multiple times.

The number of fleas you catch will go down about 30% each time for instant feedback on effectiveness of your efforts.

I tried sprays, powders, vacuuming, nothing worked. So I did this.

I took a sheet of VICTOR or TOMCAT glue paper trap and set it on the floor. I bent a wire cage to go over it, using piece of 2x4 welded wire fencing, (Other open mesh wires will work. Do not use screen door wire) then placed a 7 watt night light, connected to an extension cord over it. Discard the night light cover, use a BULB type.

Place it in the middle of the affected floor.

Turn off all the lights, pull the shades. Close the door so ONLY the night light over the trap is on. The fleas will be attracted to the light, jump for it and be caught when they fall into the trap. Within a few days I had caught all the fleas in the room. in another week I had caught the newly hatched ones.
I also caught lots of other creepy crawlies I didn’t know I had in the house, so I keep a trap constantly lit somewhere in the rooms, removing them when I have guests.

You can spend about $30.00 on a professional trap that does the same thing.

If you see a flea on your ankle, grasp it between your forefinger and thumb, walk to the trap and sling the flea onto the glue board. No need to waste time trying to crush it as it might escape.

“You could burn it down”

We tried that and it didn’t work.

The fleas were back before the settlement check arrived.

What kind of foundation does your house have?

If it’s slab/full basement you can cure the problem from inside.

If your off the ground you will have to start outside under the house or your spinning your wheels and you will never get rid of them.

"Cat is going to be gone. Can't give them away. He is a real nice cat, but he has to go. Sorry"

Please don't get another pet. You shouldn't have had one to begin with.

a cheap way is to place a bowl of bleach on the floor. Get a lamp (preferably one of those goose neck types) and place it so the bleach is below the light. Cut off all other light sources in the room.

The fleas go to the light and jump. They fall down into the bleach. end of story.

I fought with fleas for about 12 months, reason it took that long is that Bobbles(rip) had a secret bed up in the floor beams in the basement room,Once I located that and treated it all fleas were gone in three weeks.Havent seen a single flea in six years. No bombing, just flea powder and two rounds of top spot.
