Why airport screening for Ebola won't work
American Thinker ^ | 10/17/2014 | Carson Brown

During Thursday’s hearings on Ebola, Congressman Cory Gardner questioned the panel of five witnesses. Some important pieces of information were revealed. Let’s start with the numbers.

There are about 150 people a day flying to the United States from countries in West Africa most impacted by Ebola. All incoming flights connect through other countries. Ninety-four percent of these travelers will receive enhanced screening.

Curious about the 94% figure, I did some research and learned that enhanced screening will be implemented at the five international airports that “manage more than 94 percent of travelers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea….” The airports are JFK in NY (where half the travelers land), Washington Dulles outside of DC, O’Hare in Chicago, Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, and Newark Airport in New Jersey.

Enhanced screening is scheduled to begin this weekend at JFK and will be rolled out at the other four airports next week. CDC staff will be train and assist customs agents and border patrol. The screening process is as follows:

Travelers fill out questionnaires and have their temperatures taken with a non-contact thermometer. Customs agents assess travelers for any signs of illness and ask them questions, such as whether they’ve had any contact with an Ebola patient. Any traveler that appears to be a risk will be moved to a quarantine area or may be taken directly to the hospital. (If in NY, it will be Bellevue Hospital.) Travelers who do not appear to be a risk will be given a form to provide their contact information. They will also be asked to take their temperature every day. (I assume they will be given medical parameters and contact information should they spike a fever.)

Once again...from the teachers lounge..a moronic plan. Any ten year old would tell you to keep infections out of your house....close the damn door!

Why it won’t work: 1) lying and aspirin/ibuprofen/tylenol. 2) time delay (a/k/a incubation period.)

Need I say more?

"People also could lie on questionnaires, said Dr. David Mabey…."They don't want to be delayed for hours," Mabey said. "
Of course they'll lie - wouldn't you? "Have you had any contact with an Ebola patient, sir?" is up there with "Do you have any goods to declare?" and "Did anybody else give you anything to take on the plane?" in questions to which the vast majority will say "no" even if it is true. Why put yourself through the hassle of an airport 'medical' and potential quarantine if you can avoid it?

I just have to say. I know Obama is the best political strategist, even better than his advisors.

But THIS Ebola thing is the weirdest October surprise he could have ever pulled.

If the Liberian had brought LEPROSY here wonder what the Obola white house would have done.

Well, this is just as bad.

If these screening procedures had been in place when Thomas Duncan arrived, he would not have been detained because he showed no symptoms. Therefore I can say with almost 100% certainty that this problem will be repeated at least once more.

13% of those infected do not have fevers.

Pop some asprin during the flight to lower your temp and you’re good to go.

A relative of mine works for a federal department in a job that requires some degree of knowledge in life sciences, and I spoke with him last night about this. FYI, he worked at JFK until recently, and now thankfully works elsewhere. I can’t tell any more about him, as I don’t want his job to be impacted.

He told me in no uncertain terms that this is “Health Theater” every bit as much as the TSA is “Security Theater.” IOW, all show, no substance.

He also said that the figure of 150 people/day from West Africa is BS. He said that there are several flights a day from the Nigerian national airline, as well as people who arrive from Europe and South America, with lots of people from West Africa - several hundred per day, and over 1,000 if you include Nigeria. JUST AT JFK. He said that many times they will take extremely circuitous routes - looking almost like drug dealers trying to avoid being tracked - because they might save $10 or $20 on the airfare (yes, they are so poor that saving the few miserable bucks is worth their time).

He said that there is no way to definitively determine if someone has a disease based solely on their temperature, due to simple differences in our genes, general health, age, etc., and that this is easily gamed for a few critical minutes, as is being nauseated - both with a simple pill or 3).

He is staying away from the airport as much as possible.

None of this is beyond basic knowledge or logic, but the fact that a federal employee in the know said it makes all of the nonsense spewing out of DC that much less credible.

Talk about timing - I just received this from the same relative:

This was posted to our official email this morning and then pulled down less than 2 hours later, " more guidance due from the administrator".

In all fairness the guy on the Nigeria flight may have died from a drug overdose if a condom of heroine or cocaine in his gut busted.

Greetings,

Currently, most workers in the U.S. are unlikely to encounter Ebola virus or individuals with Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF). However, exposure to the virus or someone with EHF may be more likely in certain sectors, including the healthcare, mortuary/death care, and airline servicing industries. Workers who interact with people, animals, goods, and equipment arriving in the U.S. from foreign countries with current EHF outbreaks are at the greatest risk for exposure.

Precautionary measures for preventing exposure to the Ebola virus depend on the type of work, potential for Ebola-virus contamination of the work environment, and what is known about other potential exposure hazards. Infection control strategies may have to be modified to include additional selections of personal protective equipment (PPE), administrative controls, and/or safe work practices.
