How A 1977 Box-Office Bomb Became A Cult Classic 35 Years Later
Business Insider ^ | October 6, 2014 | Brett Arnold

Director William Friedkin couldn't have been on more of a hot streak: "The French Connection," released in 1971, won five Oscars, and "The Exorcist," released in 1973, won two Oscars. In 1977, he released a movie he would later call the best of his career: "Sorcerer."

But "Sorcerer" was a bomb, grossing only $6 million worldwide — short of its $21 million budget — and receiving tepid initial reviews.

The existential thriller follows four criminals from around the globe as they accept a lucrative but deadly contract to transport gallons of explosive nitroglycerin across a South American jungle. The film is the second adaptation of French novel "Le Salaire de la Peur," which was adapted as "The Wages Of Fear" in 1953.

I saw it in the theater on its original release - I have the film and the soundtrack. This movie left a lasting impression on me about the ways of men. Re-watched it just a month ago. I highly recommend this film.

I was dating several different women at the time The Exorcist came out. Took each one to see it. Saw it 3 times. First was spooky, I got stoned and nodded off through most of the third time, LOL.

I have always enjoyed Sorcerer and The Wages of Fear. I skipped Sorcerer at the theater. Didn’t get into it til it started running on cable.

I saw Sorcerer when it first came out. I must watch it again
Great soundtrack by Tangerine Dream ____ What passed for electronic/ synth music in 1977

Off topic but recently watched THX1138 and was amazed that I had overlooked it all of these years. I’m going to check out the Sorcerer when I get a chance...

Friedkin said that if he had heard Tangerine Dream sooner, he would have had them score The Exorcist.

Strange how you don’t think of something for years, and then it’s everywhere. I need to see about getting Sorcerer from Netflix or somewhere. I think my wife would enjoy it too.

Supernatural movies scared the crap out of me well into my twenties. As a young teen in 1973, forget it. All I needed to hear was that people were puking in the theater. So I was shocked when my dad decided to go and see what all the hubub was about. When he came home he said, “Eh, it wasn’t that great.”

I don’t know. I still like the theme and the movie-making. Then there’s the eerie music and the poster image. There’s something different about it, like “Rosemary’s Baby” and the original “Night of the Living Dead.”

The original '68 black and white Night Of The Living Dead verges upon being an art flick due to the direction of George Romero. Excellent use of lighting, masterful with the medium of b&w. It's startling that the movie that inspired so very many schlocky horror films could be described in such a way, but that's one of the primary reasons if not the reason it's become such a cult classic.
