I stopped.
I stared.
I said, "We haven't taken our coats off yet."
I stared some more.
He was slow, but eventually, said, "I'll come back."
He came back, handed us menus and asked, "Would you like an appetizer?"
I stopped.
I stared.
I said, "We haven't looked at the menus yet."
I stared some more.
He was slow, but eventually, said, "I'll come back."
He came back about a minute later.
He started to talk, but I stopped him right away. "How do you think this is going so far?" I asked.
"Ummmmmm, fine?"
"No. No it isn't. You're rushing us. You're trying to turn over your tables too quickly. You want drinks, appetizer, order food, eat food, hand over money. That's what you want. But it's not what my wife and I want. I want a nice meal, and a pleasant dining experience. That means we don't want to be rushed. We also don't want to be ignored -- so don't start hiding from us. We just want attentive service and reasonable amount of time to settle and make decisions. Can you do that?"
"Yes, sir. Sorry, sir."
"Fine. You'll get a good tip, if you do a good job. So far, you haven't been doing so well. So work on doing better."
He got better.

He started to talk, but I stopped him right away. “How do you think this is going so far?” I asked.
“Ummmmmm, fine?”, replied the waiter.
“You aren’t going to believe this, but we’re already done with the whole meal! It is absolutely amazing how fast you served us everything and we don’t even have anything to show for it! Not even a check for the meal Here’s a penny for your tip.”
Hand him a penny and walk out of the restaurant.
Clicked on the link. Saw a headline, no story. Clicked to let the site run scripts. Still no story. Not willing to let all other 11 sites there who want to run scripts into my computer. Or maybe they don’t like that I’m blocking 9 of their 10 trackers.
So I guess I’m not willing to pay the price to read this blogger.
One would think that if you have a wifi device tha a menu would be unnecessary because they should have looked at it and decided what they were going to eat BEFORE they walked in the door. I can’t think of a restaurant in my area where the menu isn’t available online.
How about you hand them a kindle fire with your place’s menu on it, and they can pick for themselves. sort of like a kiosk thing, have the devices collected in 8 minutes after being seated.
I have only had to do that once... Now I walk into the restaurant they fight over me and the wife to get us seated in their dinning area... I am know to tip heavy for good service.
Ever since I started using NoScript years ago I have been amazed at the amount of scripts some sites want to load. I will allow a few of theirs but many times I back right out when I allow one and then that lets 12 more ask permission. I always appreciate a company website that asks to allow it’s one lonely script. I’ve noticed some of the firearms and reloading outfits are like that.
I found the article very interesting and since I can’t use a cell phone I find myself noticing what others do all the time. It’s amazing that people can’t sit and talk anymore without seeing them constantly checking their phones and I ask myself ‘why’. What is so important that they can’t visit and enjoy the people they are with?
It’s like a non-drinker watching everyone else get drunk!
That’s what I’m thinking, Jane. And it’s not just restaurants. People are morphing into thinking the phone is a Facebook/texting object, NOT a talking instrument.
I’d recommend adding Ghostery, as well.

There's nothing like being ignored in favor of someone not present to send you signals of just how much your presence is valued.
Well...but they would not be giving up their phones in such a scenario. There is an attachment to this (to me) puerile need to constantly chitter chatter and seem like you are so importantly connected that you can’t let your damn cel phone gadget loose. It creates, to me, an atmosphere of officiousness and these are sort of snotty folks anyway, if I may be crass. It (the gadget obsession) elevates the connection to people who AREN’T sitting with you away from people who ARE sitting with you. If the patrons WERE having a good time with their co-patrons, wouldn’t or shouldn’t they be happier being able to spend more time (the extra 40 minutes) with them? No, they are in too much of a hurry yet preoccupied with the trivial. It is a value shift, away from interpersonal to the electronic.
They want a waiter to take pictures of them with their pals but they are less interested in actually BEING with their pals. It’s more important to create, tweet and retweet the record of their meet-up than to enjoy the meet-up itself. At the same time, if they are hurried, they are (as usual) completely oblivious to the idea that their gadget-obsession slows down their selection and receipt of what it is they ordered.
It is my tendency to move through a restaurant meal not necessarily as fast as I can, but more quickly than lackadaisically, unless I am with good friends and out for a fun time-sink. This is not the current modus, apparently.
I did not glean from this article whether there is or was a food quality issue. The different items generating the complaints are: Spotty wi-fi; slow service. Both of those seem (to me) to be sourced from the gadget-obsession, and maybe because the interpersonal interaction between & among the customers is being degraded because of that very same obsession, the overall experience of eating in the place itself has lost luster.
My sister went to New York back in the late ‘70s and the group decided they wanted to eat Mexican food. So after a long drive they arrived at “La Toro” which translates to female bull or maybe poofter bull.
The food matched the name.
It doesn’t drive me crazy, unless, like I say, we’re supposed to be socializing. I just feel like there’s a lot of people in a new generation that are missing out on life. If this kind of thing persists, I am concerned about how this will affect the ability of the members of our future society to meaningfully and skillfully connect with each other.
New York City sucks.
Actually restauranteurs should be grateful for smart phones as they actually drive business up and make them more efficient.
