A dog that went missing in New York more than two years ago turned up alive and well this week — in Florida.

According to Giuseppe DiBella, his 6-month-old toy fox terrier, Nika, vanished from the backyard of his Newburgh, New York, home in May 2012.

“It was one of the most horrible days of my life,” DiBella told New York's CBS 2.

DiBella spent a year searching...

This is why I believe in getting your pets chipped. Even for those pets who are constantly inside or constantly by your side.

I had neighbors who lost their cat during a home break-in. Of course, the perps didn't care that they'd terrified the cat and then left the door open when they fled from the scene of the crime. Of all the things they lost that day, losing their cat was the worst.

Even the dogs are smart enough to leave NY for FL.

I’m betting he was playing shuffleboard in a retirement community.

Dogs don’t pay taxes, yet, but I see your point.

When the owners came to pick the dog up, it asked them "So you never call, Mr. Fancy Pants?"

My cat has been missing for five days and I’m sick over it. I never thought I would become so attached to a cat but I did. She would meet me in the driveway every time and run up the walkway to lay down so I could pet her. I wish we micro chipped her. Not knowing what happened to her is the worst.

Not actually a kitty story, but a good lesson on the value of microchipping.

I am a firm believer in chipping a pet. One just never knows. And look at it from the pet’s viewpoint: I’m lost, I’m afraid, people are mean and I’m hungry and thirsty and being bullied, and I want someone to find my home and take me there!

Thanks, S&A

Was the dog Jewish? I hear Miami is nice.

I am sorry to hear about your lost cat. Outside cats are more susceptible to tragic events. I know litter boxes are a lot of trouble but I got one when we moved to the city.

Absolutely. We live on the edge of a very rural area in So. Cal. and had never let our cats (2) go outside. They have both passed on now (old age) but I still see neighborhood posters from time to time regarding missing kitties. There are still many coyotes and mountain lions in the area and it just makes me sick thinking about what has happened to these little friends.

We now have a 60 pound Bull Dog.....and we won't let her out of the back yard unless we're with her.....on a leash. I'm sure she would put up a good fight....but whether she would come out on top is questionable.

And....she's chipped....and I'm armed.

I pray that you find her.......

FWIW, cats live very long and happy lives within the confines of a house without having to go outdoors.........

I do too and they are all unnecessary........

And from time to time, I also see dead kitties on the side of the road.......equally unnecessary if they had homes.

We live in the heart of Houston and there are coyotes here that snatch small dogs and cats. I see posters for them here too. We are near a bayou that runs all the way through Houston and it is a corridor for coyotes to enter the heart of the city. It is probably worse out on the edge of town.

I have seen a coyote in the middle of the day running through an urban neighborhood. We have raccoons, possums and skunks but they don’t do what coyotes do.
