Using artificial sweeteners may set the stage for diabetes in some people by hampering the way their bodies handle sugar, suggests a preliminary study done mostly in mice.
The authors said they are not recommending any changes in how people use artificial sweeteners based on their study, which included some human experiments. The researchers and outside experts said more study is needed, while industry groups called the research limited and said other evidence shows sweeteners are safe and useful for weight control.
The study from researchers in Israel was released Wednesday by the journal Nature.
The work suggests the sweeteners change the composition of normal, beneficial bacteria in the gut. That appears to hamper how well the body handles sugar in the diet, which in turn can result in higher blood sugar levels. This impairment, called glucose intolerance, can eventually lead to diabetes.

Ditto here.
People are switching from Splenda to Stevia but I don’t like either. I don’t like some of things I’ve read about Stevia. I’ll just stick to sugar or honey.
Trying to fool the body has consequences. Better a little real sugar than a lot of the imaginary kind. Or at least that’s how this schlub has always looked at it.
You can work around the raw milk restrictions in your state by making other types of fermented milk products, such as yogurt or kefir. Kefir actually cultures better with pasteurized milk (not ultra pasteurized) and it produces quite a potent probiotic drink. I like it because you don’t have to boil and cool the milk prior to making it, as you must do to make yogurt.

And you can also make lacto fermented pickles of all sorts, which also have similar cultures to raw milk.
Good point. "May" or "may not" are not scientific terms imo.
On the other hand, I accept such terms as rough risk indicators to be vigilant about a given issue.
I use artificial sweetener, but only in my coffee. And my trick is to use multiple types so I don’t “od” on one. I use blue, pink and yellow. And half a bag of the blue or pink is more than enough for a cup of coffee.
Interesting- I noticed if I have artificial sweetened drink before a workout, I can feel the acid coming up my esophagus. I thought is was diet sodas, but it just happened with crystal light!
Well, that’s a surprise to me. I and others I know who developed type II in our 50s didn’t touch artificial sweeteners before we were diagnosed. In the group of six I know we were not more than 5 to 10 lb over our average/ideal weight, didn’t abuse sugar intake, exercised and generally took care of ourselves.
My blood sugar dropped drastically as soon as I cut out sugar and went to sucralose. I don’t need insulin, and I didn’t take any medication for it until I aged about 8 more years and the blood sugar inched up slightly from the norm.
Sounds like an agenda driven study.
That's a smart approach imo.
+1.
The wife and I were on Adkins for about 4 years. Lost weight immediately, blood sugar immediately dropped to normal and we both had more energy and fewer aches and pains. We now moderate the carb intake but try to stay mostly on proteins (red meat, chicken, pork chops, bacon etc), cheeses, and green veggies. Adkins works.
Study shows ‘scientists’ don’t know (enough) about how the human body works to speculate about shinola, but they’ll keep their hands out for MO’ MONEY to keep the study going.
As another posted, butter/eggs were bad, then good, etc. It’s all speculation and dogma to keep the gravy-train running.
I prefer unsweet tea
It's not nice to fool Mother Nature.
Artificial sweeteners taste bad. Anyone who doesn’t agree with me is abnormal.
They’re also the ones telling us that federal management of every aspect of our day to day lives is a good thing.
I do wonder if the current war on soda pop is behind this study.
Oh, and lets not forget the great fructose vs sucrose war and how that worked out... and what it’s done to our general food pricing since (along with the idiocy of “bio fuels”).
None of the consequences are unintended nor accidental.
“Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”

Stevia is probably better than the other sweetners, I think, since it is plant-based-it is more expensive, though.
I’m going to stay with the diet my family has always followed-locally available grass fed meat, fresh eggs from free range chickens, home grown veggies, fresh fruit, local honey, no processed food, no sugar, few carbs, no bleached grains, no drugs-never been overweight-best choice for me.
Say what? Who drinks 42 cans of soda in a day? If this is correct, and I cannot imagine it is, I don't know why anyone would give the study any credibility.
If you overwhelm the body with anything, bad sh*t is gonna happen to your health.
PRETTY DAMN OBVIOUS.
We simply ARE NOT WIRED to deal with new “chemicals”, whether that be today’s hybridized wheat, HFCS, or artificial sweeteners...the results will be THE SAME...which is that our bodies will have a negative reaction...now proven here.
The acid environment wipes out the good bacteria..in the gut and if it really “prospers” can lead to what’s referred to as leaky gut syndrome.
the high fructise cirn syrup....used to sweeten just abut everything tioday,,as its cheaper than sugar is a real problem too.
used in everything including Baby Formula and Baby Food.....its thought to be responsible for infant obesity.
we never used to see any truly obese infants....before....the heavy use of this sweetener . Now days its far too common.
