Good point. "May" or "may not" are not scientific terms imo.
On the other hand, I accept such terms as rough risk indicators to be vigilant about a given issue.
I use artificial sweetener, but only in my coffee. And my trick is to use multiple types so I don’t “od” on one. I use blue, pink and yellow. And half a bag of the blue or pink is more than enough for a cup of coffee.
