I don’t even know anyone who wears a watch anymore. Heaven knows I and my wife don’t. If I want to know the time, I look at my phone or any other number of electronic devices within easy view.

I wanted to want an Apple Watch, I truly did. I was very disappointed in this watch. Everything it does can be done with the phone you have to carry with it, except perhaps for some of the health monitoring that it does. Those things can be done a lot more cheaply with some of the wrist bands already out there.

Because of smartphones, I haven't worn a watch in years. I didn't see a reason to wear one in this iteration. Yet. But I am interested to see how the device evolves. There may turn out to be reasons to wear one that are not apparent just yet. When iPad first came out, there was a lot of discussion about whether people would use or need them, what with computers and netbooks (remember those) and smartphones. Yet the category did take off, and now they have had a big impact on computing. The distinction, I think, is that you didn't have to carry around your laptop to use your iPad. Make the Watch independent of the iPhone, and I think it might be more useful. Will wait and see on this one.

I’ve got a Sony Blu-Ray player, and we watch DVDs and Netflix and Pandora through it.

I’d love to drop it, and use an AppleTV instead, for all those things plus my iTunes library ...

Alas, I think you’re right about Apple abandoning optical drives ...

The ATV will handle Netflix and Pandora.

As for DVDs and BluRay, I recommend a lot of hard drive space and Handbrake.

I’m not able to rip a lot of recent DVDs and Blu-Rays. I used to use Handbrake, but it just doesn’t seem to work any more ...

The reason I’m interested in an AppleTV is because I’ve got a TON of music through Apple’s iCloud service, and could stream them through the AppleTV. Would just be convenient to use it as my living room multimedia hub ...

Most of my recent stuff comes with digital copies anyway, so I haven’t noticed; plus, there’s not of recent stuff I get anymore, it’s mostly my older collection of DVDs that I’m ripping. Got most of the movies, doing space calculations for TV series... may have to be choosy about what to rip.

You may need to update VLC, as Handbrake uses it for DVD decryption.

"Me? I’m waiting for the new AppleTV to come out, hopefully with a Blu-Ray player built in ..."

Blu-Ray = 8 Track Tape.

Physical Media is a dying breed. Its all about the cloud and digital downloads.

You are a real dinosaur. So am I.

I’m sure very soon when someone under 35 years old sees my analog watch they will think I’m some kind of old, out of touch wackjob.

Or they won’t even know what it is.

I question men who think a phone is a substitute for a watch. Good to hear you came to your senses.

“My left arm felt naked the whole time.”

Same here, even if it’s for a few minutes. Drives me nuts. Same when I don’t have a knife clipped onto my pocket.

From time to time, I wear my Dad’s 1955 Bulova...I get strange stares.

as ancient as a Snuff Box, right?

I have my grandfather’s (deceased) Hamilton watch that was given to him when he retired. I probably should send it in for maintenance and start wearing it again.

Dying, but not dead.

There’s a LOT of stuff out there (RedBox, Netflix, etc.) that is just not available for streaming. Netflix and Amazon Prime and Apple — they don’t stream everything. Until *all* of it is available for streaming, then I’m still going to need an optical disk player attached to my home theater system ...

"Until *all* of it is available for streaming"

Streaming? *all* of it is available for digital download in one form or another.

It should be, hypothetically, but it’s not. Yet.

hahaha No it is(save for a very few obscure bits of movie and tv media), you just don't know ALL the places to look yet. And that is ALL I am gonna say about that ;)

One could make the argument, why buy version 1 when you can wait for version 2?

Better yet, why buy version 2 when you can wait for version 3?

Even better, why buy version 3 when you can wait for version 4?

LOL!

The watch does not work without an IPhone

That means the watch is not a product but a peripheral

So? All the more reason to follow my advice and wait until version 8, 9, or 10 and beyond to come out.......

I suggest anyone who doesn’t think this is a great product, please go watch the full presentation covering everything from yesterday’s announcements.

Used to be I was a great gadget guy. Over the years, there became less and less to get excited about. My old drive to buy watches died over over twenty years ago, perhaps 25.

Folks, if you give this watch of Apple a good look see, I think you’ll have to admit it’s very cutting edge.

You’re in a complex shopping mall. You need to navigate to another store. The Apple phone will guide you to it, without you even having to look at it. It has notifier levers on the bottom of the watch that will notify you when to turn right or left as you walk to your destination.

This watch does so many trick things, I can’t even remember them all. If you’re anti-Apple, that’s okay. There are other brands out there. Go for one of them. I don’t mind. This watch is not ho hum. If you have a gadget guy bone in your body, you’ll recognize this phone as the most impressive watch since the HP-01.

If you don’t know what the HP-01 was, don’t bother to write back.

This watch has a number of new cutting edge technologies in it. While some are merely tweaked, the ingenuity of the Apple team is amazing.

The iPhones announced yesterday, the new Apple Watch, folks if they’re not your cup of tea, that’s okay. Please don’t make a fool out of yourself as if they aren’t some of the most amazing techno gear things ever. They are.
