Emma Sulkowicz is turning her assault into art -- and a protest against Columbia University's sexual assault policy
On the first day of her sophomore year of college, Emma Sulkowicz was raped in her dorm room bed. The Columbia University senior says the perpetrator was a fellow student. He still is and has been since he allegedly assaulted Sulkowicz and two other female students. As Sulkowicz reported in Time earlier this year, all three cases against her offender were dismissed. So, shes not taking it anymore.
After joining a federal complaint in April over Columbias mishandling of rape cases and speaking out about the schools failure to address her assault, Sulkowicz is now embarking on yet another effort an artistic one to make change on campus. For her senior thesis project, the visual arts major will perform what she is calling an endurance art piece, in which she will carry around a standard twin-size dorm room mattress with her everywhere she goes, until her rapist is removed from school.

Depends on the university. For example, at The Ohio State University, the Ohio Highway Patrol aka State Police also has jurisdiction and can override campus police.
Not sure what the situation is at Columbia...
lol
Also...
Future employer: Uh, no. No you can’t bring that mattress in here.
(Unless of course she goes to work at Mattress Firm.)
lolol. I could TOTALLY see that career opportunity for her.
Um, unless the rapist is a prominent athlete or his family is connected aka a big donor...

******** She explains her rape-mattress performance art. I am semi-sympathetic to her rape claims
She claims to have been raped in 8/12, didn’t report it until 5/13, and now expects the accused to be expelled? Sorry, Emma, but at best, you’re a fool.

Doesn’t look like she had her day in court, just before a university panel.
In this article, her side of the story, the interaction with police was not successful.
Couple of things for me. One, we have a generation of girls that give it away too easy, no standards, no expectations. Young men have no respect for them because of the way they dress, the way they drink, the way they act. Very sad.
Two, report it immediately if it happened. Unfortunately rape so humiliates the victim, I can see not reporting it.
advertising for a new rapist with more talent!
She showed you, eh?
In looking at her....those consensual escapades had to be after midnight and a belly full of booze...
....and I can’t put my finger on it.
If anything resembling rape ever happened to any female I know, my only question would be ‘will you help me bury the body’.
Three women have accused him of sexual assault, odds are he is a rapist. I like she going after him and not letting the matter drop.
while it certainly isn't a good idea, the mere fact that she was naked still gives no one the right to sexually assault her.....people would certainly take notice, but that's all that they are permitted to do.....
be very careful with that observation......
Believe if I were her father I would counsel against walking around with a mattress on her back ...
There are two ways of looking at this:
1. The guy is a dirtbag who somehow is able to talk his way out of rape convictions.
2. A group of feminist activists wants to make an example of this guy (plus men in general).
You decide.
