Hockey Puck-Size Product To Save Your Life
gear junkie ^ | 9-2-2014 | Stephen Regenold

The Essentials Puck, one of six versions from the company, has basic survival tools including a Bic lighter, a small knife, an LED light, whistle, a tiny compass, duct tape, aluminum wire, a pencil, paper, a safety pin, aluminum foil, and 72 inches of paracord.

All this fits in a palm-size puck that’s waterproof and lightweight at 3.5 ounces. It costs just $15.75.

The company sells similarly stocked pucks for first aid, medicine, fire-starting, illumination, and water purification.

The pieces in each puck are basic but of good quality. The container itself, a sturdy waterproof case, slips unseen into a backpack. Its lid doubles as a reflective signal mirror.

I’d buy it just for the pencil and paper.

...something designed for men to use on first dates to keep from breaking wind.

The cork is available for a slight up charge.

We used to call them our SERE kit.

For the civilian, I suggest that every camper, hiker, and hunter carry a survival pouch based on getting lost and spending the night away from their camp.

Anyone can put together a kit, but the trick is that the kit remain so small and light, that you never take it off, that means tiny, personally I use a camera pouch that I don’t mind wearing and sitting down with.

What do people do when they go camping in the mountains? Often they pick their beautiful spot, throw down their pack, and then go to take a quick look around or get some firewood, and then, oops, they are lost and the sun is going down, that is when you don’t want to have made such a wonderful and “bulky” survival kit, that it was also set aside “for just a minute”, back at the camp, it needs to be tiny enough that it is always on your belt, always.

Those satellites will be worthless when the base that sends the ephemeris is hit.

If I ever meet you in Vegas, we’ll know exactly the contents of each other’s luggage. ;)

I want the larger one that has the 45 Automatic.

Dunno about the .45, but the shoe-shine stand in a building I used to frequent had Kiwi shoe polish in tins large enough to hold a Baby Browning. Definitely a hidden-in-plain-sight idea.

One things these kits leave out is water. At the very least put in 2 heavy ziploc bags and a small dropper bottle of bleach.

When my prepping became somewhat obvious to everyone that came in the house, the then 13 year old female (suffering from cramps) got sorta snotty about all of it.

I showed her the 'supplies'

And the TP.

And what I thought she she be allowed to know about chocolate....

That, and a heating pad and a Disney movie, and I was ok again.

Now that she's older the teen female still doesn't know where all the chocolate is. She can find the heating pad, the 'supplies', and the TP without a problem.

I figure on living an extra 3 months by lying about chocolate I don't have.

In my kit I do have those

Even in movies and TV shows from all eras, they throw away their canteen when it is empty, with never a thought that even finding a lake, they can only benefit to the extent of drinking while sitting there, since they have no means to take some with them.

All of which is essentially useless if you dont have the survival skills.

Even a lighter and a space blanket means that you have the means to build a fire (or three), and wrap a windbreak around your shoulders and lap, that is a great start to surviving a night and in most conditions, it means getting most of a nights sleep.

Need, at least, a few rounds of .22LR, but then no one could afford it.
