Dogs Get Blues When Youngsters Go Back to School

Young people aren't the only ones who get back-to-school blues. Pooches used to months of constant playtime can get upset when their best buddies disappear with the dog days of summer.

Many dogs whine and wait eagerly at the front door but eventually adjust to the absence of their young owners when they are in class. But millions of dogs can feel abandoned, sad and unable to cope — and they look for ways to lash out.

Our kitty gets sad. But that’s because the oldest boy is married, gone and has his own kitty. The youngest just left for his senior year at Purdue. Kitty just sits in the parlor where he kept his stuff and mopes.

I retired after 32 years of teaching. MY yellow lab has had a smile on her face all summer.

No, no, no…AndyCat, an inside boy, get down and blue when I leave home and when I get back, he’s pacing by the door. Meow meow meow, which roughly translates to “You left me, how come? How dare you? Don’t you know I depend on you for EVERYTHING all the time? Where’s my catnip? Where’s my Party Mix? Why’d you stay away a WHOLE HOUR? You didn’t ask permission or anything. You’re bad, you’re rotten, where’s my catnip?” Meow meow meow.

Mine do. When I come back from church or shopping, they're waiting at the door for me. They expect a certain amount of lap time every morning, too.

Way back in first grade (1958) I walked a mile to school every day and our dog Matt Dillon would show up at my desk or the playground about once a week. He was a huge lab mix, great mutt.

My cats are that way when it is me or my hubby, but when some overly rambunctious youngin’s are around, they hide!

One of the dogs where I work will alternately lay on his boy’s bed, the carpet by the bed, or by the door, waiting on the boy to come home from school.
