Flying is already a pain. But a story from the Associated Press Tuesday really brings home the point: The wire service reports that an entire plane was diverted on Sunday after a fight broke out over a passenger's right to recline her seat.
The AP explains:
"The spat began on United Airlines Flight 1462 because one passenger was using the Knee Defender, a $21.95 lock that attaches to a tray table and jams the reclining mechanism of the seat in front. "The male passenger, seated in a middle seat of Row 12, used the device to stop the woman in front of him from reclining while he was on his laptop, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"A flight attendant asked him to remove the device and he refused. The woman then stood up, turned around and threw a cup of water at him, the official said."

As others have posted, the seats are chosen by the airline.
However, my advice is to avoid Airbus aircraft. Their air distribution nozzles are crap. Boeing makes much better nozzles.
See post 7.
I would passive-aggressively get the point across without saying a word.
“Either ban them completely or allow unfettered use of them. Dont ask someone who is using it to remove it. “
I have a gate for sale for people like you. You can latch it between the two aisle seats and prevent people from walking back and forth hitting you with their elbows. Also allows you to stick your feet out into the aisle without worry.
You should’ve told those two women that your name was Tonto Goldstein. (Old airline joke)
Careful. You’re making sense!!
How long would you expect the person you are messing with to not say a word back?
I’d politely ask you to stop. If you didn’t, odds are I’d do something to you we’d both regret. I have a short fuse. Even shorter after a few drinks.
I’ve had a few physical confrontations in airplanes, ball parks and restaurants where people who think like you used their passive-aggressive tactics to wind me up.
So. You like to get drunk and start fights.
God, you’re a loser.
did the people who sell those things have a comment?
That was you?????
You paid for the seat, I paid for the seat behind it. So your comfort is more important than my actual pain???? I don’t think so.
I’m with you, R2nd.
If you need to recline that badly then you should buy a seat that supplies that, without infringing on other’s sore and squished knees and legs.
I’m amazed at the people on here that believe their “right” to recline supersedes everything else and everyone else. Almost leftist in your self centeredness.
R2nd, you’re not the nincompoop here
While the person in the back, getting squished got his or her seat free, I suppose? LOL
Once upon a time, long, long ago, the airlines didn’t attempt to pack people in like sardines and this sort of thing didn’t happen.
Now I avoid flying like the plague, but I’d be pretty PO’d if I bought a seat which reclined and someone behind me told me he didn’t much care for it.
If you want room to spread out, then spring for a First Class seat.
This brings to mind the worst flight I was ever on. We were in the back row of a Southwest flight, our seats did NOT recline. The seat in front of me was broken and the woman was able to stretch out almost flat. The back of her seat was 6” in front of my face.
I am claustrophobic and after asking her to please put her set up a little I freaked out and came boiling out of my seat. I climbed over my husband and the young marine seated next to him.
The stewardess was not able to get the woman, who pretended to be asleep, to move her seat up. Finally my husband took my seat and kicked the back of her seat until the plane landed.
What a burden, to be so high above all of us regular people!!
Ok smarty. I’m not exactly a frequent flier, but do fly more than most. Let me tell you, you are being surly and as hard hearted as any leftist. I’m so sorry that actual PAIN gets in your way when your highness wishes to recline. Tough titty!
If you can't stand someone in front of you reclining a couple of inches, then choose a seat that is behind a bulkhead or behind an emergency exit row.
If someone pays for a seat that reclines, they have the right to recline.
LOL so hard! Good catch
You sound like you are a man out of control of his own self. Not very mature. You’d be arrested and I’d be laughing. (at you)
