USC senior cornerback Josh Shaw has been sidelined indefinitely after suffering two high ankle sprains while saving his 7-year-old nephew from drowning.
According to USCs RipsIt Blog, Shaw was attending a function at his cousins apartment when he looked down from the second-floor balcony and saw his 7-year-old nephew, who cannot swim, had fallen in the pool and was struggling to stay afloat. With total disregard for personal safety, Shaw jumped off the balcony and landed on the concrete below.
He then crawled into the pool, grabbed his nephew and got him to safety. Then, even though both of his legs were in immense pain, he was able to get to the pool ladder and pull himself out of the pool.
"I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew," Shaw told the blog. "My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible."
As coach Steve Sarkisian points out, not many people would have taken that leap.
"That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside. It is unfortunate that he'll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he'll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible."
Shaw was named team captain this past weekend at the Salute to Troy dinner and he definitely exudes leadership on and off the field. Hopefully when he returns to the field, Trojan fans and college football fans in general will give him a standing ovation for his bravery.

Awesome story
Can we just give him an honorary Heisman now?
This man is a HERO by anybody’s definition!
Just, wow!
Nothing less than heroic.
Doofus!
Don’t react, act!
Kid could have been under water and breathless for two minutes or so without harm.
Take the stairs, flush his lungs, apply breaths and chest compressions as needed.
How would he know that he wasn’t already under water for 2 minutes, and what are the chances is going to know how to clear the lungs and apply chest compression?
Good job. I hope Mr. Shaw recovers quickly.
True heroism.

How far is the stairwell? Does the doofus know how to do the
Heimlich? Who knows?
Just the two cents worth from a guy who knows a bit.
Jumping from a two story balcony, twenty feet onto the
concrete pool deck?
Dooofus!
The word Hero is often applied for far lesser deeds. This is one case where it applies. Bravo Zulu.
The only doofus I’m witnessing is the one who goes out of his way to belittle a what is clearly a heroic act...
I didn’t see 20 feet mentioned, I saw “second story balcony”.
Which would mean 10-12 feet plus swinging over the railing and depending on whether he hung from the railing, etc.
I give him a half-doofus with a difficulty of 2.8.
i think i woulda climbed over the balcony and dropped down as quick instead of leaping over, but good save.
and every 5 year old need to be taught how to swim.
God, heal him.
I hope some NFL team drafts him next year just to honor him with a contract. Let’s see if that gets 1/1000th the attention Michael Sam is getting as a seventh round draft pick.
My first thought as well. The kid is still splashing around - plenty of time to take the stairs. But hindsight is 20/20...
