5 things you should know about poverty in Southern California
Orange County Register ^ | Aug. 20, 2014 | JENNA CHANDLER

Economists say regional poverty trends are ‘alarming.’

Redlands-based economist John E. Husing issued a dire warning Wednesday, as elected officials from across Southern California pledged to reignite Lyndon Johnson’s war on poverty:

“If we do not solve this problem, we are not going to want to live in Southern California. The communities are going to become unhinged.”

Husing is one of several economists who looked at findings from the 2012 American Community Survey and state Employment Development Department to find out where poverty is concentrated in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Ventura, San Bernardino and Imperial counties.

Some of the results were alarming, said economist Wallace Walrod, who advises the Orange County Business Council.

They found disparities among the percentage of residents in poverty across counties: 19.1 percent in Los Angeles, 12.9 percent in Orange and 20.4 percent in Riverside. But Hussing and other experts said the flow of goods and services is so closely integrated, that poverty is a regional issue, not a local one.

Here’s what else they found:

Poverty is on the rise

Four decades ago, the region boasted poverty levels below California and national averages. It’s now flipped: 17.8 percent of residents are living in poverty compared to 17 percent statewide and 15.9 percent nationwide. Hussing attributed the shift to changing demographics, icnluding an upswing in the Hispanic population, and stringent state environmental regulations hampering manufacturing and construction.

Compared to the 1970s, fewer adults earn high school diplomas

Also in 1970, 70.4 percent of adults in the region had at least a high school diploma, more than 8 percentage points better than the national average. By 2012, 42.3 percent of adults had attained that same level of education, trailing the national average of 41.7 percent.

Economists said this is important because educational “attainment” is considered a root...

I wouldn’t worry much about anyone getting “enslaved” these days.

What is much more common is gaming the welfare system. You can work full time off the books and still get welfare if you know the ropes.

I’ve known illegals who have much more spending money than Americans who obey the law.

There’s plenty of large houses in SoCal. My realtor friends sell them for cash these days to a largely Chinese clientele.

“Unfortunately this isn’t going to change soon as we here in California are surrounded by Democrats. “

You mean Neel Kashkari, the great hope of the GOPe, can’t save us?

Vote for Neel, you get amnesty, abortion, gay marriage, and you lose your guns. Now that’s a Republican!

Do you mean letting third world mentalities take over the area was not a good idea?

Whodda thunk?

“Poverty grows because it is subsidized.”

In SoCal we import poverty by the million. Illegals don’t come here with a bank account.

Last time out it was the Japanese buying up commercial property like crazy. Didn’t work out too well for them.

Certainly not our pals in the GOPe. They fall all over themselves trying to pander to them faster than the Democrats.

I love hearing Hannity say “build the wall first!”... what the boy genius leaves out is that his GOPe heros are more than willing to build the wall and still give amnesty-by-another-name to the 30 million illegals they refuse to deport.

It doesn’t look quite the same. The Chinese are buying homes to live in. Prime properties for the most part.

My realtor friends aren’t complaining at all. But it is pricing out a whole lot of American buyers, it’s keeping prices higher than what can be justified using traditional lending standards.

Restrict the EBT, payments and other benefits after 6 months and you will see the numbers change and also many illegals IMO leave.

The problem with affordability comes from zoning restrictions that require large lot sizes and discourage multi-family dwellings. Chinese plutocrats can certainly afford mansions in Palo Alto. Domestic working class stiffs can't even buy a micro home, because they're probably prohibited there and most of the areas that are close to work (i.e. near major CA cities like SF, SJ, LA and SD).

“The problem with affordability comes from zoning restrictions that require large lot sizes and discourage multi-family dwellings.”

That doesn’t fit the facts in north Orange County.

"elected officials from across Southern California pledged to reignite Lyndon Johnson’s war on poverty"

This sentence should sent up rockets, mortars, fireworks, and alarm bells ringing...the Dem's next hopey changey step has just been revealed

how are the Reps going to handle what surely will be a press for even more moneyprinting?

Democrats only know how to blame others until there is no one else left to blame (see Detroit).

I grew up in the small Southern California town of El Toro, Since renamed Lake Forest. It was a very nice place to grow up. Crime was very low, and the town next door actually had the lowest crime rate in America for a while.

A few years ago I was in SoCal and wanted my wife to see the house I grew up in.

I was I never did that, because my neighborhood has been transformed into a grotesque parody of civilization; a cross between Tijuana and, well, the wealthier part of Tijuana. Windblown litter and filth cover my old street, and yet no one there has the thought to clean it up; There are 30 illegal aliens living in the house where my family of 5 grew up; beater cars parked everywhere including what used to be my front yard.

Just thinking about it brings about a profound sorrow that I cannot quite articulate.

“Just thinking about it brings about a profound sorrow that I cannot quite articulate.”

I’ve heard that sentiment many times from California expatriates who have come back for a look at their childhood homes. They are invariably shocked at what has happened to their old neighborhoods.

The once pleasant American suburbs they remember are now overcrowded, gang infested, and graffiti scarred. The homes are occupied by a new people who have nothing in common with the people they remember. Not language, not culture. Nothing. And this was totally unnecessary. It was the product of a willful refusal to deport illegal aliens by the likes of Dubya and Obama both.

Sometimes the transformation happens very, very quickly. Once a neighborhood starts changing over from American suburb to illegal alien slum everyone tries to bail out before the crime touches them personally.
