I carry concealed a nice glock .40. Fits female hand great, but want a short barrel home invasion shotgun loaded for bear. Any recommendations on a reliable, relatively light-weighted weapon? Brand? Model? Thanks!
AMEN!
I had to shoot a .45 ACP indoors once in earnest. I thought someone had kicked me in the head.
Never again.
When it really, really hurts to shoot, you make damn sure.

Yup. Better them than mine.
Got two Mossbergs. Both are pumps.
Also have a Mossberg ATR in .243.
One big plus with Mossberg - if you ever do something stupid (like getting a laser bore sight stuck in the chamber) Mossberg will fix it for you for the cost of shipping it to them. They’ll even pay to ship it back.
Great customer service - and fast!
No one’s suggested a Benelli?
In that situation I would consider a rifle instead. Maybe a lever action rifle in 38/357. Very little recoil yet still deadly well over a hundred yards. And cowboy guns don’t seem so scary to newbs.
I’m 6’. Shoot a glock .40. Not afraid of recoil but want stopping power, reliability, reliability, reliability, and don’t want to shoot through intruder and 3 walls. Is that Rem 870 20 guage?
Kel-Tec KSG 12 gauge fighting shotgun, it holds 15 rounds of git-er-done ammo and is very compact.
How reliable are the semi vs the pump? Seems if you can just aim and shoot without the pump action....that’s the way to go.
Excellent advice. I have a short barrel Mossberg 500 (18 1/2) with an adjustable stock. I too alternate rifled slug and buckshot with the slug first, then #1 buck, then slug... I figure if I need a “precision” shot first - like shooting past my dog who will no-doubt be in an intruder’s face or hanging off some body part of the intruder’s - the slug is a better bet for not catching her with a stray pellet.
Yeah but I want the sound intimidation/deterrent of pump action. Worth its weight in gold. More accurate too as I’ve learned here.
Rem 870 in 20 gauge is female friendly in use and effect on bad guys. To avoid shooting through 3 walls use birdshot, not buckshot.
What is a deer slug?
That's a very personal decision. Grand-dad loved Browning (God bless JMBrowning) autoloaders. I preferred pump shotguns. My choice. My dove and duck for dinner.
I'll never disparage someone else's personal choice.
Realistically, they both shoot faster than I can be accurate.

They got lots of snake problems that pop up without warning. I warned him about ricochets and said shot was a lot safer to grease a snake.
With a major caliber shotgun, weight helps tame recoil - something significant for a (as-indicated) female, unless you are an abornmally large woman.
Unfortunately, one of the better options, the Saiga 12, was just banned from import.

Is there such a thing as 20 gauge bird shot? So really I need 20 gauge deer shot and certainty no friendlies behind walls?

You want 20 gauge birdshot based on your parameters.
A .5" diameter chunk of solid lead.
Does a number on door jambs and hinges.
Poof! Gone!
