MADISON, Wis. In the land of cheese and bratwurst, a surprising 740,000 Wisconsinites are worried about going hungry. A recent study by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health shows a significant portion of the state's population is worried about not having enough to eat.
Lead researcher Dr. Javier Nieto said it isn't just a problem in the rural areas of the state.
"We also found more than six percent of respondents in suburban, wealthier areas, also responding 'yes' to the question about whether families have been concerned about having enough food for their family in the past 12 months," Nieto said. "Our estimate is probably conservative, because our definition is pretty strict."
While there is a correlation between food insecurity and poverty, Nieto said it appears to be a problem in every part of Wisconsin.
"The prevalence of concern about hunger ranged from about 9.5 percent in the west and south to 14 percent in the northeast and southeast," said Nieto. "But again, differences are fairly small."

We have nothing better to do with our money than fund studies such as this?
Food “insecurity” sounds a bit like what my sister talks about in her High School where she teaches.
The parents buy coach bags, purses, high-end clothing & jewelry, and after those are purchased—there’s nothing left for food (or electricity for that matter).
Time to head to the food bank and local agencies......
Just wait until the (incompetent, corrupt, and generally fully of sh.. EPA) coal restrictions kick in. When we start getting power restrictions, followed by food problems, we can really start.
And the Obamadorks, Hollywood, and DC had better hope they never see what’s gonna happen when the white guys start acting like our friends in the ‘hood.
If they quit taxing us for study grants, we’d all be able to buy a can of Spam. Azzholes.
It is iffy. There’s a big difference between being “worried” about the possibility of going hungry, and actually being hungry.
Redefining words the liberal way... “Food insecurity” can mean anything and everything a liberal wants to push for more liberalism.
This study is probably being released to help the Democrats in November.
What a ‘Great Society!!’ !!
The only way to make if fair is if we make EVERYBODY face food insecurity!
It's the socialist way.
funny, since nearly every poor person I know is obese
Of course, if I loot my neighborhood I might discover it’s a bit difficult to find, though there is always McDonalds.
And it’s the WORST kind of hunger!!
These poor souls don’t even KNOW they are obese....
They're not malnourished. There not underfed. They're not starving, or even hungry. They have enough to eat, and many are overweight.
But lefties interview them and ask leading questions to come up with bogus “food insecurity”.
“funny, since nearly every poor person I know is obese “
Yes, especially here in WI. I think the survey is a bit misleading, as any thinking person should be “concerned” about the food supply. I have a good paying job and work a lot of overtime, and we’re concerned. Concerned enough to start building a food supply in case something does happen that either we can’t get to a store, or the stores don’t have much food. We don’t actually go hungry, though.
Move to Madison, go on welfare, riot, burn things down, vote Democrat, blame someone else, etc.
There are supposed to be government programs for food, clothing, shelter, home maintenance, etc.
You don't expect them to cover those expenses out of their mad money, do you?
