A red 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta, which was once involved in a fatal accident, has set the world record for a car sold at auction, going for $38.1 million at a sale in California, auction house Bonhams said.
The price offered on Thursday by a bidder whose identity was not disclosed surpassed the $30 million (all figures U.S.) paid last year for a 1954 Mercedes Benz W196 race car, also sold by Bonhams, the auctioneers said in a press release.
Weve always maintained that we would exceed the current world record and that the car would bring between $30-$40-million and today the GTO did just that, Robert Brooks, chairman of Bonhams, said in a statement.

My favorite Ferrari. Had the Aurora HO Thunder-Jet model of this car when I was a kid.
That looks like a diesel I’m guessing with the heater plug dangling off the front.
I thought it was Glassmoyer replica with 700 horsepower.
The 1967 Ferrari P3/4 and P4 was a much better looking car. And a good one. It was Enzo Ferrari’s answer to the Ford GT-40.

Bookmarked. I gotta show this to someone.

I always wanted a GT40 with the head clearance bump. Bad to use for a commute to the East in the morning and to the West in the evening though.
I watched a couple GTOs raced at the old Riverside track in the early 60's and was dissappointed in the apparent lack of acceleration and sound. Expected much more. They were like someone's personal car out in the midst of race cars.
I have NO idea how much...
Yes, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd owns a large Ferrari collection.
