Ferrari Sells for $38-Million at Auction, Breaking World Record

A red 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta, which was once involved in a fatal accident, has set the world record for a car sold at auction, going for $38.1 million at a sale in California, auction house Bonhams said.
The price offered on Thursday by a bidder whose identity was not disclosed surpassed the $30 million (all figures U.S.) paid last year for a 1954 Mercedes Benz W196 race car, also sold by Bonhams, the auctioneers said in a press release.
Weve always maintained that we would exceed the current world record and that the car would bring between $30-$40-million and today the GTO did just that, Robert Brooks, chairman of Bonhams, said in a statement.

Why would anyone spend that much money on a car that's already been in a wreck? The steering's probably out of alignment now ...

Cameron: The 1961 Ferrari 250GT California. Less than a hundred were made. My father spent three years restoring this car. It is his love, it is his passion.
Ferris: It is his fault he didn't lock the garage.

I love cars and airplanes, and have restored a few of both in my day, but this approached idol worship. It is no good, and it is dangerous spiritually.

Too bad you can’t drive it. It’s too valuable to risk among texting and illegal alien drivers.

Nice car. So nice, in fact, that Pontiac copied the “GTO” name for a hopped-up family sedan.

I have a 1984 Mercedes Benz W123 saloon and I'll take a lot less than $30 million for it. LOL

Yep, that bastardization of "GTO" was a huge knee-slapping joke about the Pontiac back then.
As if there was the faintest comparison between the two, in looks or even more ridiculous, capability.
