Farmville family stunned that officer fatally shot Golden Retriever

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. — A Farmville family is searching for answers after a Prince Edward Deputy shot their eight-year-old Golden Retriever, named Party, ultimately killing him.

“The dog was at the same level of the officer when he fired,” said homeowner Stephen Carwile, and indicated that the deputy was standing at the bottom of the deck.

The incident happened June 27 while the family wasn’t home. A deputy was serving Carwile a civil warrant when he said he felt threatened by the dog.

“I come home to blood all over the place all over my porch,” said Carwile. He called the sheriff’s office after he couldn’t find Party, then saw his blood stained deck and the warrant.

“The lieutenant called me and stated that my dog had tried to attack the officer and the officer had shot my dog.”

The Prince Edward Sheriff’s office put out the following press release:

On June 27, 2014 a Prince Edward County Deputy was charged by a vicious dog at a residence while he was attempting civil paper service. The Deputy tried to get away from the dog but the animal lunged at him so he fired his weapon as required by training. Animal Control was notified seeking medical assistance for the dog, but the animal later died.

The sheriff’s department said the incident was investigated by the Virginia State Police, however a state police spokeswoman said that was not the case.

“The resident did speak with Sgt. King, who explained that the Virginia State Police cannot investigate an incident involving another law enforcement agency without that agency’s formal request, or the request of the Attorney General, commonwealth’s attorney, or grand jury,” said state police. “You will need to contact the sheriff’s office for details concerning the incident.”

Party’s owner, Carwile’s 14-year-old stepson Prescott Stewart, said that’s not the dog he knew, and he can’t imagine the dog lunging at anyone.

“It’s like a void that has been put inside of me I can’t describe it; he was just that kind of dog that if he could be human, he could be my brother — it’s just hard,” Stewart said.

A necropsy shows Party was shot twice, and died of blood loss.

“Anything after the first shot the dog was disabled, the second shot he was just shooting to be cruel,” said Carwile.

The Carwiles said Party suffered on their deck for more than an hour before before he died in the care of the dog warden.

“I know he suffered, he was trying to get in the house,” he said. “He wanted one of us to open that door and let him him so he could be saved.”

“I still have bullet holes in my house, blood on my porch and bullet casings laying in my yard that I have to look at everyday and it just keeps going through my mind without anybody doing anything about this,” he added.

The Carwiles plan to file a civil suit. They want this case investigated and the deputy who killed their dog terminated.

“I want to see him loose his job and never tow a firearm again,” said Carwile.

“I just hope he thinks about it and realizes he did wrong,” said Stewart.

I was passed by a Homeland Security vehicle today on I 75, south of Atlanta. I sped up to his speed to see how fast he was going. 100 mph. Of course the rest of us peasants would be arrested for that. I doubt it helped, but I called 911 on him.

"And what did he write that wasn’t accurate?? He didn’t pre-judge. Where did you make that up from?"

They have invented this new thing called reading...you may wish to try it sometime.

When I was young, I always wondered how they found men that would be willing to join the SS in Germany, and carry out the acts that they did. Now I know the answer. All the sociopaths flock to power positions. That’s what they are.

May you need an officer today and experience the bizarre, unthinking, craziness your cult deserves as the perp overwhelms you.

Not my argument to jump in, but I will anyway.

In my 61 years I can't say I have ever needed an officer. Of course I am an independent minded conservative libertarian/common-law type citizen who carries everyday. I realize that carrying can't protect me from all dangers, but it enables me to live my life without fear the street criminals among us.

However, during the past 30 years I have come to fear LEO's. Not because I purposefully break any laws, but simply for the possibility that I may not feel like kisisng hsi ass that day.

The Garner case in New York is just the most recent example. Garner died from a choke-hold because he would not kiss the LEO's asses. When the LEO's first contacted him he was not violent and had done nothing illegal. The LEO's escalated the situation and killed him over a prior tax violation. You or I would certainly go to prison for this, but the LEO's have a"get out of jail free card". Its called "I was in fear for may safety".

I remember the police officers of my youth who were thinking, caring members of the community. They used common sense and reason. They had the respect of the community. If one of them were wounded or killed in the line of duty the entire community would be enraged and looking for retribution.

Unfortunately, the majority of today's "LEOs" (yes, there is a difference from a deputy or police officer and an LEO) are jackbooted a-holes looking for a reason to kick ass and take names. They become incensed when their authority or actions are merely questioned. They would rather escalate a situation to prove they have the power than use reason and common sense to keep the peace.

I see public opinion of LEO's continuing to erode and they have no one else to blame but themselves.

Must have taken you most of those 61 years to visit and evaluate the entire US, but thank you for that objective data.

"I see public opinion of LEO's continuing to erode and they have no one else to blame but themselves."

Well, that and the thousands of drug-crazed maniacs that are roaming the streets, out of control, wantonly killing for a high. Add to that the insane controls placed on officers that make ROE look like 007's license to kill.

"The Garner case in New York is just the most recent example."

Garner selling cigarettes illegally certainly makes him a poster boy for honesty, integrity and "Man of the Year". But, I like your Obama-type anarchical, every-man-does-what-is-right-in-his-own-eyes style of antinomianism. Soon it won't be the "jack-booted" thug cops knocking on your door, it will be the cartel. Enjoy.

Well, it may not be all I have. However, I believe you left off the question mark from your question.

Any LEO that shoots a Golden Retriever deserves to be laughed off the force.

The fact the department supports him is just as despicable as the shooting.

LOL! Sorry Dutch, but you still come off as a JBT bootlicker.

First, my observations are certainly subjective, but based on 61 one years of empirical experience. I been fortunate to have traveled and experienced a lot more than most folks and am therefore quite confident in stating my opinions, including my observations of the sharp decline in respect for LEOs. They are earning the disrespect. It also correlates to Fed Gov grants for weapons and equipment to militarize the local police organizations.

Second, I never said Garner was a model citizen. However, it is clear from the video that this entire event could have been handled calmly. The police started it, became unnecessarily aggressive...and then escalated it. Garner was killed for what?...cigarette taxes?; for not getting your vote for man of the year?

And lastly, in response to this tripe:

and the thousands of drug-crazed maniacs that are roaming the streets, out of control, wantonly killing for a high. Add to that the insane controls placed on officers that make ROE look like 007's license to kill.

But, I like your Obama-type anarchical, every-man-does-what-is-right-in-his-own-eyes style of antinomianism. Soon it won't be the "jack-booted" thug cops knocking on your door, it will be the cartel. Enjoy.

LOL! What you describe is a direct result LBJs Great Society and the Fed Gov's so-called War on Drugs. And, if the cartels do finally get around to kicking in my door they will likely be illegal immigrants using weapons from Fast and Furious.

No, it is not the cartels I fear, but an out of control Fed Gov and a nationalized militarized police force who will have no compunction about killing your dog, your child, your father, your mother, grandmother etc., for not obeying orders or fitting in to the new socialized paradise. Those not killed will be sent to camps. Should I end up in one at least I will know why I am there. You, however, would have no idea.

There is some seriously deranged logic embedded in your cryptic responses. Perhaps a little more Geritol will clear that up. Keep strutting around...the rest of the folks in the home won't mind.

The question that society needs to ask itself is do we want a police force that serves and protects, or one that intimidates?

The police are still at the mercy of the purse strings controlled by politicians; and the politicians are at the mercy of the voters. There is no federal law that says the public needs to spend half of a community budget on law enforcement. When the public gets fed up enough it will demand politicians cut budgets and the force. The public still controls the police. Their ineptness is causing major lawsuits and costing citizens and loss of respect.
