A deputy shot a man carrying an unmarked "air soft gun" during a domestic violence investigation Wednesday morning in Edgard, the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office said. The suspect, identified as Kirk Bovie, 49, was wounded in the upper leg and taken to University Hospital in New Orleans.
An air soft gun is a non-lethal replica of a real firearm. It typically fires plastic ammunition and is used in recreation and law enforcement training.
Such replicas often have an orange tip, to better distinguish them from real guns. But in this case, the Sheriff's Office said, the orange tip had been removed.
The shooting came after deputies were called at 5:51 a.m. to the 100 block of John Pierre Street. The caller told 911 operators that Bovie, who lived on the street, "pushed down her niece, punched the complainant in the face and broke a window on her trailer. The complainant also told operators that Bovie had been smoking illegal narcotics." When deputies arrived, Bovie fled into the woods.

If you remove the orange tip, you’re basically asking for it, especially since cops are trained to be trigger-happy these days. I wonder what would happen if you painted the tip of a real gun orange? Doesn’t matter I guess. They’ll shoot you if you point a cell phone at them.

If I painted a pipe black and held it like a rifle at a cop...i’d expect to get shot if I didn’t comply. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

There was one in Detroit a couple of years ago where the cop shot a teenager in the hand. The kid was playing around with a toy gun and the cop happened to see him point it at another kid’s head.
Disguising a firearm to look like a toy would be a state by city issue.
And probably earn you a well deserved face plant in the concrete if
a Cop catches you with it.
I guess if it was medical marijuana it would be legal.
Any toy gun that does not have the orange tip gives a officer the opportunity to shoot and kill anyone from toddler to adult and be praised by his department for it. I suspect that goes for cell phones, too. Many people have been shot for holding cell phones without orange tips.
Was thinking that marijuana is too inclusive since the headline had “illegal narcotics” which a much broader term. Just saying. Should have used the Latin definition: WackusWeedus.
John Dillinger used a soap bar carved in the shape of gun with black shoe polish on to fool an entire jailhouse full of police so he could break out.
I suspect that, by and by, we will find out that the orange tip is itself justification for gunning down a child after the first time a killer uses an orange tipped real gun to shoot someone.
