Rex Reed: Melissa McCarthy Gives ‘Tammy’ Her All, but It’s Nowhere Near Enough
New York Observer ^ | July 3, 2014 | Rex Reed

Posted on 07/04/2014 11:10:56 AM PDT by EveningStar

The good news is that Tammy is not a crappy remake of the 1957 Tammy movie with Debbie Reynolds that spawned three sequels and a TV comedy series. The bad news is that this one is much worse. It’s a desperate and brainless vehicle for Melissa McCarthy, which she wrote herself, with her husband, Ben Falcone, who also directed, with all the efficiency and verve of an abandoned Volkswagen on the Jersey Turnpike. There isn’t a single shred of evidence that either of them has one iota of talent in the world of filmmaking. Tammy is not just a celebration of everything vulgar and stupid in the dumbing down of American movies. It’s a rambling, pointless and labored attempt to cash in on Ms. McCarthy’s fan base without respect for any audience with a collective IQ of 10. And it’s about as funny as a liver transplant.

Modern surgery&medicine has come a long way when it comes to transplants.

Sadly, they can not yet transplant laughter and guffaws where they would do us all benefit.

They used to do it, but somewhere along the way, Hollyweird got diverted. Probably global warming.

They’re desperately trying to include FAT in the new normal.

Want to see a really good movie?

"Begin Again" has the not unfamiliar general them of people finding their way through music. It's surprisingly well done. There is no meanness as people work through their situations and flaws. It cuts across various ages and music styles, thus conveying the universality of music. The scenery and music are enjoyable.

No car chases, murder, monsters from outer space, bizarre special effects....just real good movie making.

One of Reed's most accurate reviews:
Mulholland Drive

"The worst movie I’ve seen this year is Mulholland Drive , a load of moronic and incoherent garbage from David Lynch that started out as a rejected TV pilot and predictably ended up at the New York Film Festival, where pretentious poseurs sit with their eyes glued to any screen as long as the projector is still running. From this bizarro atrocity, they should get astigmatism."

"... loathsome, incomprehensible and dismayingly amateurish Mulholland Drive . . ."

Yep, that's catty. And accurate.

Why critics do you respect then? Music? Literature?

MD was awesome. Reed dislikes anything mildly experimental.

Hardly. Only a moron would compare them to critics.

If you say so. Not all of us have a need for someone to tell us what our opinions should be.

roger Ebert wasn’t a film a scholar? Or Andrew Sarris? They were just like Harold Bloom is a literary scholar/critic. What you’re really sating is that there should not be any specialized discussion. Just hobbyist banter.

I haven’t seen the show and probably won’t. Nevertheless, isn’t Rex Reed about 268 years old?
