What Are You Reading?
Vanity | June 27, 2014 | Tax-chick

What are you reading? There used to be a quarterly "What are you reading?" thread, but I haven't seen it for a long time. I got a lot of good book suggestions that way, and I miss it.

So here's a thread! If you're reading something interesting you think others would like, or something boring you'd recommend we all avoid, jump in! If you have a ping list of FReepers who might be interested, ping them!

Sir Martin Gilbert’s “The First World War” is excellent. He’s a great researching and also a readable writer, unlike some. I see in the library catalog that he’s also written a volume on the Battle of the Somme.

I’ve read quite a few biographies, too, of figures major and peripheral. Kitchener, Allenby, Pershing, Lawrence, Wingate ... just whoever seemed interesting.

Now reading The Greenlanders by Smiley. Different kind of book, more of a saga.

Sometimes I wish that you lived near me so we could talk. I so enjoy your posts.

Thank you! If you’re ever around Charlotte, stop by, have some cheap wine, browse the bookcases!

“The Greenlanders” sounds interesting. I have The Great Courses lecture set about the Vikings, and the professor talked about Greenland and went into a lot of detail about the sources.

You might like it then. I think it would be interesting to read it with the background information. I will. Charlotte is in my future travel plans, nebulous as they are so far.

Thank you for the recommendation of “The Art of Racing in the Rain.” I liked it very much!

I finished reading “The Scarlet Sisters” this weekend. Fascinating! I thought it was marvelous that Tennessee married the banker with the palace in Portugal.
