KUALA LUMPUR: The captain of Flight MH370 has been identified as the prime suspect by a Malaysian police investigation into the disappearance of the plane after checks cleared all other people on board, a media report said today.
The criminal inquiry does not rule out the possibility the Boeing 777-200 plane was lost due to mechanical failure or terrorism, but the police view is that if it was the result of human action, the captain was the most likely perpetrator, The Sunday Times reported.
Malaysia's special branch focused the inquiry on Captain Zaharie Shah, 53, after intelligence checks failed to substantiate any suspicions about the other people on board the jet, the report said....
Detectives conducted more than 170 interviews. They found that Zaharie, an outgoing, married man with a penchant for gadgetry and postings on social media, appeared to have made no social or work commitments for the future, the report said....
The investigators found that Zaharie had programmed a flight simulator in his home with drills rehearsing a flight far out into the southern Indian Ocean and a landing on an island with a short runway.
These were deleted but computer experts were able to retrieve them, the report said.
The pilot had made no secret of his unusual hobby, creating aviation videos that were posted on the Internet.
But behind the facade of a normal family life in a comfortable Kuala Lumpur suburb, with three children and a five-year-old grandson, police heard rumours of marital estrangement and tensions that have been denied by Zaharie's family, it said....

I don't see any airport there. Just a tiny village at the northeast corner.
It doesn't look like the topography would be very favorable to constructing an airport.
Actually the liberal mentality has been in charge of this investigation for the last 3 months — that mentality that blames inanimate objects for crimes rather than the people who operate them — like blaming guns for shootings and computers and planes for crashes.
No one’s ever to blame — no one’s ever at the controls — these things just have a mind of their own
I think that’s why he needed a simulator — to practice landing on topography like that or on a short strip of asphalt road or in a crabrun on the beach or in the waters just offshore.
The first investigators must have suspected this or gotten a heads-up from his computer — note their yellow NTSB flight path. It ends up right at New Amsterdam — right on the last Inmarsat arc:

And IIRC early on there was a significant air and sea search of the waters right there.
He may not have made it but it doesn’t mean that he didn’t try — that is, if that is the island in his computer.
Are we really aware? Looks like the “That happened months ago, who cares?” crowd is already purging the plane from the memory of the low-information voter. If it didn’t crash, and was indeed hijacked to become a weapon, most will never remember it until after the crater. They’ll read about it somewhere behind beibers next folly and the kardashian divorce...just like zero...

Red flight path to S28 E98.1 as MH370 flies @ 460mph would be 3336 miles from KLA.
Yellow flight path to Amsterdam Island S37.84 E87.55 as the MH370 flies @ 518mph would be 4230 miles from KLA and that path is here:

The Australian government started by searching near the northeast end of the seventh arc, partly because that location was consistent with an aircraft that was limping slowly through the sky because it was damaged, or one that had burned a great deal of fuel in altitude changes.
I don’t recall this search unless he is referring to the South China Sea search —
MH370 pilots wife breaks silence, confirms Zaharies voice from cockpit, says The Telegraph

So are the Malaysian investigators now going to call her a liar or tell her that she doesn’t know her own husband’s voice???
Did they look ON the island? Wouldn’t that be fun?
I hope so —
But my guess is that they realized that he did not have the fuel nor the time to get there and it would not have been possible to reach it by autopilot. So they searched the waters short of there and left it at that.
