They were good. Was there ever a Steely Dan song that was bad?
Just heard "Deacon Blues" on the radio. Timeless.
Back in the day, they were derided as a "Fern bar" band. I have no idea what that even means. But back in 1977, upscale men apparently went to these "fern bars" in their leisure suits and picked up women with the dulcet tones of Steely Dan in the background. Maybe a bit of Spyra Gyra and Chuck Mangione as well. But let's not talk about them, shall we. This thread is about Steely Dan.
Is there gas in the car?
Are you all playing?
I cried when I wrote this song...sue me if I play too long.
Look at you. See #61.
What a hoot. Didn’t realize you’d beat me to it.
Does shooting his baby down by the river count?
Nope. Not that I remember.
Steely Dan “Aja” was the “euchre album” while I was in college, although I thought “Countdown to Ecstasy” was overall their best album.
Call your doctor - call your shrink
Western science she strictly rinkydink
They all masissi but we hang tough
Apsatively gonna help you beat that stuff
bttt
I think they do an annual multi-night run at the Beacon in NYC. I saw them a couple of years ago there...........amazing....
“I saw the movie, and I read the book”,”and I just turned twenty two”, “everybody knows”.
“After the gold rush” “Welfare Mothers” “find someone that is turning”, “it keeps me searching for a heart of gold, and I’m getting old”
I’ve loved Steely Dan in the past and still do, but tend to sidestep listening to their more popular work due to my being a little overexposed.
Pretzel Logic is their best album, in my opinion. Some very interesting, relatively obscure songs. “Through With Buzz,” “Monkey In Your Soul,” etc.
Saw Steely Dan live at Red Rocks last year. They’ve always been my absolute favorite but I’d never seen them live. It poured freezing rain the entire time. It was awesome.
What happened to Steely Dan?
They took the Wolverine back to Anondale.
Bump for later as my cat has decided she needs attention NOW.
They once participated in some New York city revue. Other performers included Michael McDonald, Phoebe Snow, Boz Scaggs. What a treat in Mansfield ma.
“FM”...I still refer to it as “The Deejay’s Anthem”.
Thanks for convincing me to never read Naked Lunch.
Played a mean steel pedal as well. Pretty solo on "Pearl of the Quarter".
Barrytown is my all-time favorite Dan song.
And with the current WH occupant, it takes on a whole new meaning.
