Swimming pools are a much greater danger to black children and teens than they are to other kids, a new government study shows.
Black children ages 5 to 19 drown in swimming pools at a rate more than five times that of white children, the research found. That suggests a lot of blacks are not learning to swim, said the lead author, Dr. Julie Gilchrist of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Swimming is a life-saving skill, not just another sport, she said.

Interesting. Regardless, it seems every time I see ‘statistics’ being reported on about the poor or minorities, someone’s after more of my $$.
Ya know? I call this ‘natural selection’...
The lifeguards can’t swim...?
Never mind
The PC numbnuts will chime in that your study is a lie and its whiteys fault
Or race is just a social construct etc
I see a few of them here already
I’m from Mississippi...my hometown is now 80% black
Its physical....down here they have owned all the municipal pools since the 60s and city govt since 80s
Bone density is primary culprit and different muscle structure better suited for springy and burst talents than the long muscles for swimming
Every race has strong and weak suits
There was no charge for joining a Boy’s Club back then...any difference today?

We live in an area in N. Calif where the minority population is mostly Hispanic rather than black, so that’s where I’m coming from. In “the city” (San Francisco) I’m going to guess there’s more programs for city youth. Here in our smaller city, however, there’s not much going on in terms of serving poorer youth. For instance, I heard of a free program teaching Hispanic kids to swim (since we have a problem here with H. kids who can’t swim). It turned out to be ONE free lesson. Big whoop. Also in our city, there are no free or cheap public pools. The public pool closest to us charges $5 for an adult and $4 for a kid. So if you have a parent who wants to take one or two kids to swim and learn, that adds up quickly (for someone who doesn’t have a lot of money).
That is because 7 is way too old. Start at under 1 yr. old and no lessons are even necessary.

Great advice. I’ll see if I can find a time machine here someplace.
pools are racist
Look at pictures of Olympic competitors. See how many Olympic swimming competitors (from any country) are black.
Then see how many Olympic sprinters (from any country) AREN'T black,
So we’re supposed to believe a 10% difference in bone density explains it? When I think back on those black kids flailing in the pool, it’s obvious that there was more going on than just physiology.
Our local YMCA has a swim program. If families don’t have enough $$, it is free for them. They advertise this all the time. I suspect the city I live in does the same thing, for residents the local pool is $1 and there is a large learn-to-swim- program there too.
Hell, my black friends joke about how black people can’t swim, with the same argument between culture and physiology. I’ve trained near a few black triathletes and they tend to just muscle through the water rather than float and glide.
White men can't jump; black men can't swim. Seems fair...
I agree with you re: it being learned rather than due to body shape, but all the races have slightly different average body shapes.
When Celtics player Brandon Bass’s young son learned how to swim and his dad still couldn’t, Bass very publicly took some lessons with some kids in Boston this year to raise awareness. I thought it was a great thing to do.
You know what the right answer is?
Whatever one can handle.
I can handle the hard truths
Most here reach for the IT’S CULTURE elixir
Induces a sense of well being with a King speech in the background
To each his own
I’ll pass....a lifetime of hard knocks experiencing the sharp edges of race and culture has taught me otherwise
“Swimming pools are racist”, screams the Asspress louts. White privilege ya know.
I don’t buy it either. Most definitely societal.
My sister is an MRI/X-ray tech and sees a lot of this stray dog mentality come through her department. Nearly always blacks.
