Despite the fact they lack the physical adaptations of a climber, crocodiles can climb trees and do it regularly, a new study in Herpetology Notes finds.

After studying five crocodilian species on Africa, Australia and North America, the team found that the reptiles can climb as high as six feet off the ground. Juveniles have been spotted as high as 30 feet. Combined with anecdotal evidence in these areas, the researchers found that the smaller crocodiles were able to vertically scale trees, while their larger counterparts relied on angled branches.

When we lived in Pensacola we had problems with the “waterbugs” taking the kids little red wagon at night and having chariot races around the neighborhood.

Note to self: Forget climbing trees to avoid crocodile bites. I had counted on that diversion to save my bacon in a crocodile emergency; but no more.

This one does not CLIMB trees, it runs a lumber yard. It eats trees whole and "passes" finished lumber in about 3 days.

This one USED to climb trees...until it climbed an "occupied" tree.

I know there are no crocs in Florida. But I don’t trust the alligators. If crocs can climb trees, I don’t see any reason gators can’t. Could explain where some cats go.

I’m not nuts about the iguanas, either, but at least they won’t run you down.
