Elderly man calls for ambulance, violent cops beat him instead
daily caller ^ | 4-21-14 | Robby Soave

An elderly Missouri man dialed 911 and asked for an ambulance to come and help his ailing wife. Instead, the police showed up, threw him to the ground, sat on his head and handcuffed him.

He later received stitches for his injuries.

“I never had anybody jump on me for doing nothing,” said the man, Elbert Breshears of Humansville, Missouri, in a statement to KSPR 33.

The trouble began after Breshears called to get help for his wife, who suffers from dementia. He asked for paramedics to come provide assistance to her after she knocked out one of their home’s windows.

The Humansville police arrived first, however.

According to Breshears, an officer tackled him right away, and then barked at him to stand up.

“He told me to get up,” recalled Breshears. “I told him I couldn’t.”

There is this story, local TV http://www.kspr.com/news/local/elderly-man-says-police-beat-him/21051620_25555390

Breshears says he and his wife were holding hands outside the house and she was calling for help when the police arrived. He says they tackled him, ordered him to get up, and when he couldn’t comply, they became more aggressive.

He also says he’s had problems with the police since the beginning of the year. Secondary versions of the story change that to “past problems with the law.”

The police chief told the reporter over the phone that Breshears is charged with elder abuse, resisting arrest and assault on an officer - the last two standard charges whenever police tackle a citizen.

The "sense" is that of the cops who probably jumped to conclusions. Saw a broken window and a harassed man and ASSUMED he was violent. No questions, just jump him.

Maybe not, but I would put money on it. Then--when they told him to get up he couldn't and they attacked him for not complying.

Maybe not, but that is my take.

What ever happened to arriving, announcing "we're the police" and asking what is going on.

I suspect that the problem here—and in other recent cases, is that you call the same emergency number—911—for the police or a medical emergency ambulance. A lot depends on the 911 operator getting things right.

I’ll bet the operator heard what sounded like something about a crazy woman, and summoned the police instead of an ambulance.

[There has got to be more to this story than a few paragraphs in The Daily Caller.]

There’s a big gap in the middle of the page and then the story continues.

>>A spokesperson for the police declined an interview with local reporters, but did say that the man is facing charges for abusing his wife, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.<<

Same old charges when things look really bad?

They declined an interview or comment OTHER than to discredit him and portray the old guy as a guilty wife and cop abuser, using the media?

Seems a bit unfair..They can say what they want in the media to discredit him, but no other comments on the occurrence?

And if the investigation is on-going, why would they already paint him as guilty in the media?

As the saying goes, almost anything bad can be made even worse by calling the police.

The POS people these police departments hire without psychological screening is the root of the problem. And, today’s police department policies are working to create a police state. Such policies allow aggressive personalities go berserk with the innocent citizen. This is why we have a Constitution.

Now it's more like "Comply or Die".

People have been known to die, even when they comply. I know the hippies and others, used to call them pigs. I wonder if they were on to something, or if the drug war has just made the majority of them into JBTs?

He didn't this time, from what I can see. He called for EMT, and they sent the Police. "Policy." They do that here, too. You want an ambulance, the cops show up. Then you get to deal with their bullshit on top of whatever you needed the ambulance for. My wife needed an ambulance once, and she had to get roughed up by a bullnecked cop before she would get transport.

They really are bastards. It's gotten to where I don't care what bad things happen to them.

That I do.

This story had a dearth of information.

Lousy reporting IMHO.

"There has got to be more to this story than a few paragraphs in The Daily Caller. It makes no sense."

Ma'am? I respectfully suggest this isn't the country we grew up in.

If you only knew how happy I would be to eat my words should this turn out to be a fraudulent report.
