CO2 levels at 800,000-year high

For two consecutive days last week, the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the earth's atmosphere exceeded 402 parts per million (ppm,) higher than at any time in at least the past 800,000 years, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Carbon dioxide levels tend to peak in May, which means that they are likely to rise even more. According to an article in Mashable, a news and tech website, the latest figures "put humans into uncharted territory."

Just last month, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a damning report that illustrated the growing dangers of global warming. The panel focused on carbon dioxide emissions and warned about the dangers of inaction.

Tree rings, ice core samples, sedimentary rocks, peat bog samples?

Those are all proxy measurements. You can't compare between levels directly measured, and levels calculated through some proxy method without thoroughly validating the method.

Not much, but that period (800K years ago, the Quaternary Informal Sub-Era) did see the rise of Homo Erectus and various associated settlements. Some 20K years later they mastered fire, about the same time the Earth's magnetic field reversed.

Some 100K later saw the rise of Homo Heidelbergenis. But then that was long after the period in question.

From what I have heard, after a few hundred years the ice core layers get paper thin from compression. After that they use techniques such as bouncing lasers off of dust particles, electrical conductivity and other techniques. Analyzing this data, unfortunately, involves a lot of subjectivity and assumptions
.................
I’m not familiar with the details but presumably they would take ice core samples from a lot of different places and only publish dates with their corresponding atmospheric levels when they had a lot of samples. so that the number would be an average estimate.

They can get air bubbles trapped in ice cores. They can date the ice cores very very accurately.

Can they really? By what standard and by what means? The “standards” of course meaning the artifically determined “standards” that were created to substantiate a predetermined hypothesis...........
.................
Of course, you’re right. I am assuming that the guys who actually do the measurements are not corrupt to the bone. Rather, the guys who spin their numbers are corrupt.

That said, paleo climatologists have NEVER confirmed what AGM people say. People who study climate from thousands and millions of years ago have always showed that climate always changed radically and often rapidly. Further, their graphs have always showed that changes in heat have always— and I mean always— preceded changes in CO2 levels. That means that when the world warms up CO2 levels increase. Not the other way around...which is what the AGM people want you to believe.

(Why is this. There is a post above that points to it. When the world warms the oceans release more C02.)

What actually causes the warming comes from somewhere else.

These day people point to the sun and also from time to time —volcanic eruptions...and even more infrequently...cosmic events. Likely the last really big cosmic event was something that caused they younger dryas 12k years ago.

Farthest back I can remember is 779,000 years. Nope I can’t help.

...and then, inconveniently, find out that temperature change precedes CO2 change by roughly 800-1200 years - destroying the entire AGW “theory”
...............
absolutely.

We certainly need to stop measuring CO2 on those pesky volcanoes. That measurement was taken at Mauna Loa’s summit.

Don’t forget about water vapor, which on “average” is at 4,000 ppm but can go as high as 40,000 ppm at the equator.
